Otracraw, I live near Glasgow and I can tell you after 54 years living in Scotland there are still some phrases I find hard to understand. Hope this book comes out in a kindle edition. I clicked 'Tell the Publisher'

It is a 'classic'. There are a few in the series. Also worth getting 'Tom Shield's Diary' - he was (is) a humorist on the Glasgow Herald.

Used to have trouble with Glaswegian, too but Geordie can be tricky. It took me ages to work out that 'starved' meant 'cold'. Felt pretty silly.

Damaskcat says:
I had trouble with Glaswegian until I sat next to a Glaswegian at work for a couple of years. I started off understanding about 2 words in 10 but ended up being able to understand about 9 ourt of 10. I think it's practice as much as anything.

Isn't it amazing how diverse are the various dialects/accents in such a relatively small country as the British Isles?

Uhh - no! I was going to say that he was the opposite but that isn't quite true either! This was in the early 1990s.

@ S H
I read this in PB some years ago;
The Adventure Of English by Melvn Bragg

It's an absolutely fascinating journey through the English languge from the time of the first spoken words. Highly readable and it's astounding that English survived at all as a language bearing in mind the diverse influences; Roman, Norse, Anglo Saxon. It's worth a look if social history, language and dialect interest you. It explains many of the regional differences and how they arose.

Bookie - That looks well worth reading. A French linguistics professor, Henriette Walter, brought out a similar, very interesting book in 1997: L'Aventure des Mots Français Venus d'Ailleurs. If you can read French and are interested in languages, it's a great read. I remember thinking at the time how wonderful it was that a book on etymology could remain near the top of the French list of bestselling books for months.

I really enjoyed it Susan C. Some fascinating stuff. Now you've set a challenge. I'll have to look at your rec. Yes, I used to read and speak French. I did a language course at the Sorbonne many years ago as part of 'A' level studies, but I'm more than rusty. I recently downloaded some free Voltaire and Maupassant in French intending to brush up. I'll have to bring that forward if your book looks appealing. Much appreciated, thanks.
