Just out of sheer boredom one evening i decided to look at the top 100 jazz albums in the amazon chart. Not much evidence of jazz in there to be frank. Anyone else even bother to look at it? i know i won't again. Who is it actually meant for?

I've never seen this jazz chart to offer an opinion. Where is it to be found ?

R.K.H

I note that you'd like to get Gershwin Plays Rhapsody In Blue at some time in the near future. I'm not sure if our tastes entirely correspond , but I found the below an outstanding performance of "Rhapsody".

I found Hugh Laurie's album a pretty mediocre attempt at blues despite it's general popularity and being mislead by either Jez Nelson , or was it the Guardian jazz critic (?) waxing lyrical about a live performance on Jazz on 3 recently.

It is surely the dog standing on its hind legs thing coming into play in some form here? That an actor/ comedian can have another skill clouding the judgement?

Unbelievable that the "Top 100" (!) contain NOTHING by Tubby Hayes, Joe Harriot, Michael Garrick, Nucleus, Stan Tracey, Tim Whitehead, Tim Garland, Gwilym Simcock, etc etc. Brits play GREAT JAZZ.

Yes some great stuff on your lisr. GP. Have still not found the chart but if it is a top 100 of downloads by UK buyers then that is a bit sad but not surprising. So many people dismiss jazz which is not from the US. And I think the British Trad revival of the 50s turned younger generations off the genre for a while

Saw an half hour docu on his "blues" album and 'blues with a feelin' it 'aint. Whyis it that successful actors always seem to think they must be equally good as musicians and vice versa,

Albert Ayler "Spirits / Witches&Devils"
Pharoah Sanders "Pharoah"
Charles Mingus "Mingus Dynasty"
Sun Ra "Heliocentric worlds of Sun Ra vol II"
Sun Ra "Futuristic sounds of Sun Ra"
New York Art Quartet "New York Art Quartet"
Ornette Coleman "Ornette!" (sic!)
John Coltrane "Coltrane plays the blues"

M. Adams says:
What strikes me about these lists, is not only that there is no British jazz, but nothing from outside the USA at all. It's a matter of opinion and taste and all that, but REALLY? Nothing? Not even Django Reinhardt? Nothing from the whole of the old world since jazz began than Diana Krall and Bela Fleck? I don't understand.

Mark Porter says:
Is Ms Krall not American either???

Diana Krall is indeed North American by birth - but of the Canadian variety.

Harriott was Jamaican and none of the Brits you mentioned has made an album worthy of a top 100 placing IMHO.It's all subjective anyway.I've always thought 'A Love Supreme' over rated and when did Miles Davis really play jazz, but who cares? Like what you like - listen to everything you can and make your own minds up.
