N.Filippou:
The Brief (if you mean the short series with Alan Davies) has English HOH subtitles.
Silent Witness has English HOH subtitles, but BEWARE: this is valid ONLY for UK edition of series 1 and 2. I do not know about the rest, as those are imports from Netherlands, perhaps they have only Dutch subtitles starting with series 3.

Hello. It is the German thing to do - to do things properly.

Being "a bloody foreigner" myself I quite agree with you. And then sometimes the sellers are so rude when you wish to return a dvd because of lack of subtitles promised in the product description.

What if you buy dvds with subtitles according to product details, and then when you get them there are no subtitles anyway?

Hello Michael S. Phillips.
Oh yes please. I'm considering The Miss Marple set of four discs, the ones with Margaret Rutherford. Amazon.co.uk gives no hint of subtitles. In a review of the set someone wrote that it luckily has Dutch subtitles, but that's not my language. Anyway I always prefer English subtitles fot English speaking movies.
Thank uou
Jorgensen

Right you are! I'm German and need subtitles, too. It's a drag to have to search for information about subtitles in dozens of other sources. I really like Amazon, but this really is a drag.

C. G. M. says:
I wrote to Universal recently, concerning the absence of subtitles on the Dinnerladies set. Though I'm not hard of hearing, I found the very rapid speech, and frequent jokes referencing culturally-meaningful issues, difficult to understand; the nuances of American English and British English sometimes making understanding difficult. Subtitles would've been a big help. They were when I watched the wonderful 'On The Up' series.

Universal replied that while most of their feature films were subtitled, but that television series, especially series running more than 18 hours, were often not. The reason being the cost of creating subtitles, which is based on a per-minute cost. They said they often had to weigh the cost of creating subtitles against the expected sales of some titles, and often make a decision as to whether to provide subtitles, or simply not release the series.

I don't know the cost of creating subtitles from scratch, though I have had to edit a couple sets of English subtitles from some Mainland China films, whose grammer was pretty bad, and burn my own copy of the film with updated subtitles, and the simple re-writing of existing subtitles for a feature length film is very time consuming. I have no idea what professionals charge to do that kind of work. I'd charge plenty for it.

Nevertheless, for those who are HOH or Deaf, subtitles are pretty much essential. I guess, once again, publishers have to decide whether the sales lost to the HOH community exceed the costs of subtitles. I don't know what the profit margins are on the typical DVD.

Do you mean Bob and Rose with Alan Davies, because if you do it has English HOH Subtitles (I bought this from Amazon so it should be OK)

Welcome to the age of DVD and Blu-Ray. When will it finally dawn on Amazon.uk that this medium is NOT the good old VHS any more but one that gives you the opportunity to select languages and subtitles!!! And why is Amazon.de the only decent dealer to whom it is self-evident that the relevent information must OF COURSE BE PART OF THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTON!!! - Get your DVDs from there, most often they feature - apart from the original track - a plethora of languges and subtitles. And as I said: You don't have to enquire first - this info is always on the net for any DVD!!!
