i followed the fall from the early days and had their first singles bingo masters breakout and fiery jack, which ive re discovered on youtube! loved the 1st album live at the witch trials.most exciting band i ever saw in the late 70s. im listening to a lot of 80s fall i didnt know before.your right of course their both great.

Its The Fall by a mile. Whilst I liked Unknown Pleasures there are a number of Fall albums that come ahead of it in my view - Dragnet, Grotesque, Extricate (which I recently re-discovered), the Unutterable, your future our clutter. I have seen the Fall live a number of times and they have never disappointed (although it can be hit and miss these days). Dave

Seen Division twice in Seventies - They were Punk who evolved. Mark E Smith was a Hippy who taged onto the coat tails of punk. No contest

i dont think anyone would describe mark e smith as a hippy! he was at the iconic sex pistols concert in manchester that kicked off the punk scene in manchester so that cant be described the coat tails either.

Why choose? I love both bands for different reasons. Of course, Joy Division made far fewer albums than The Fall, so who can say where Joy Division would have gone after 'Closer' had Ian Curtis not departed. I have loads of Fall albums, some are very patchy, but some are excellent. 'This Nation's Saving Grace', 'Bend Sinister' and 'The Unutterable' are my absolute favourites. And MES for all his silly behaviour is still a force to be reckoned with. Gawd bless his nylon socks!
