anyone out there simply bought a blu-ray for it's transfer without actually liking the film that much, just to show off? i can think of a few of my own: cars, watchmen, apocalypto, hellboy, potc 2...

Yes "Transformers 2" that was a couple or so hours of my life i won't get back, picture was awsome though, and the sound was good but a little overdone for my tastes.

'Master and Commander' will demonstrate your surround sound system beautifully, it sounds like you're on the ship.

Oh yes, and I never regretted it either! I did this first with audio when I got "Transformers" and "300" in order to give my THX surround system a chance to shine. Like C.Gould, I got "The Spirit" (and also "Sin City") for the visuals. It just turned out that both are stunning audio quality discs too, and I ended up liking all four films despite not expecting to. You have to have a reference disc or two, but now that I have a few I would no longer buy a film on BD which I suspected (let alone knew) to be iffy just because of A/V quality.
