Nobody seems to have started any discussions in this forum, so I thought I would. What board games would people recommend?

I am currently enjoying Agricola, but we tried the expansions, Farmers of the Moor and I wasn't so impressed with that.

Can I also recommend Through the Ages: A Story of Civilisation. It can be quite long (4 hours + for the advanced game) but was definitely worth the effort.

Risk 2210, carassonne and Chaos in the Old world are really good as well

I love when it comes to year 5 in risk 2210 everyone freaks out trying to get as much land as they can, then they freak out more at the end of there turn as they have realized that they have no troops to defend with.

Go For Broke (presuming they still do it). It's the opposite to Monopoly insofar as you start with a million quid and the winner is the first one to spend it on white elephants like the Dry Gulch Oil Co, numerous hotels and frittering at away at the racetrack and stock market. The stumbling block is that there are several ways in which you are also given money so spending that million isn't easy as it sounds. I can't remember much more about it as I played it back in the 70s as a kid but I really enjoyed it - maybe it's been given a bit of a makeover since then.

No, Not basic Risk (though Risk 2210 is fantastic), No, Really No (Apell rule is completely broken), Learning lists of 2 and three letter words to get one up on other people is not fun, yeah I'll give you the last one.

kill Dr lucky.
It's a board game from the states from cheapass games. it's hard to explain but it's like chasing a moving target collecting weapon cards, room cards and trying to kill the good doctor. Other players can stop you by laying other cards.

Chess - can't beat it: 2 players, totally absorbing, you'll never master it and absolutely no luck involved.

Rather than just being negative, I'll suggest Ticket to Ride as a great introduction to modern games for those who have only played old-fashioned board games (Monopoly, Risk, etc.). I've also had a lot of success with Pandemic - the idea of a cooperative board game tends to appeal to people who have only been used to competitive games like Monopoly.

Agree that people should look beyond monopoly etc, can highly recommend carcassonne for 2 players really different and easy to learn. For 3 or more players the settlers of catan is a great game it's about building settlements and cities the best bit is the social side with other players when it comes to trading. The trading gets even more amusing when a few drinks are consumed whilst playing.

I have discovered a fantastic game called 'Mensa Connections'. It's not a game that is going to take up hours for one round, but you can quite happily play for hours. Each round lasts on average 30-40 mins and it is so simple to learn that even young kids can pick it up. However the real enjoyment comes when you play strategically of course.
Great game.

Chess and backgammon have already been mentioned. Go and mah jong may be worth a look as well. For a contemporary board game that is quite good fun, and needs several players (four or more), try Articulate.

Junta is a great board game for up to seven players. A game of corruption, murder and betrayal that I would recommend to anyone.

Settlers of Catan Settlers of Catan has to be one of the best board games of the last 10 years. It is a settlement building game with trading between players and a great combination of strategy and luck (dice roll) elements. Can play with 3-6 players and internet variants for other numbers.
