It's a question that's been asked many times before. The short answer is:
1. Upgrade to a BluRay player. It will play your DVDs and upscale them to 1080p better than most DVD players.
2. Buy new films on BluRay.
3. As for re-buying old films, don't bother. I've bought a few, but the quality varies. Some don't look any different to the DVD version. If it's a film you watch over and over again, and if the transfer is any good (preferably a remaster) go ahead. Some upgrades look like a totally new film - I'm thinking 2001, Taxi Driver, Blade Runner etc. But on the whole, I'm enjoying my old DVD collection just as much as my new BluRays.

If you have the set up for it (i.e., a decent sized TV capable of full 1080p and a reasonable sound system) then go for it. As the other chap pointed out, just buy new stuff on Blu-ray, or things you're a fan of. Stuff like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings have to be purchased on Blu-ray, it's like the law! lol well maybe not, but if you love those movies then you must have them in the best possible quality! The same goes for the Godfather trilogy, again assuming you enjoy those films. They did a damn good job restoring those. Bits in the first are a little hit and miss, but that's down to the original source material being damaged or missing in some cases.

Also, if you're a Star Trek fan then you most certainly have to get the restored release of The Next Generation. The price may seem high, but they're VASTLY VASTLY superior to ANY release before them, even the ones you see on TV. It's hard to express just how much better it looks and sounds.

I totally agree with J.Yasimoto that Bladerunner also looks outstanding. I've yet to pick up 2001, but I know folk who have it and have seen a good few reviews on it and it apparently looks like a new movie, as does Zulu.

So, in short. It's worth it, and some old films are worth re-buying because they're seriously that well done.

Patrik,

Nor sure if you are trolling with the "blue-ray" name but I will give yiou the benefit of the doubt,I have around 366 blu-ray's and all of them look better than their dvd counterparts, some do look more of an upgrade than others but a lot will depend on your dispays size,as on the bigger displays dvd's can look very poor indeed and to be fair was why I stopped buying them.
