Rumpole & the reign of Terror

As you are all probably frequent readers maybe someone can help me! I read a book recently and I know the exact storyline but I cannot remember what it is or who its by and its driving me mad!
It was about a girl who grows up abroad (possibly India) with her mum and dad and older sister. Her sister is married off after a coming of age celebration and she is left behind. She remembers a mural painted on the back of the house and I think there is a veranda round the house. They have a maid and a cook that the main character gets attached to. I dont remember exactly how but her mother dies and her father starts to go a bit mad because of it. He uses up their money turning their home into a hospital for war victims and forces the girl (she is about 14 now) to become a nurse even though she faints at the sight of blood. Her aunt helps her to run away and marry a man who is much older than her to get away from her father. They move back to England and live in brighton and the couple, though married, are never more than friends particularly. She then finds out he is gay and that is why he married her but has shown no interest in her other than companionship. Her husband is sent off to fight in the war at this point, and she starts to work in the library. She meets a soldier (who i think is red haired and australian) and sleeps with him for the first time. They fall in love, but then he has to go to fight and is also killed. I think here she falls pregnant and possibly dies because the baby is moved to australia.
The whole novel is written I think from the perspective of he baby, or the baby's child once she has grown up. She revisits brighton and meets a fortune teller to turns out to be an old friend of the protagonist.
This is basically it, i think i have made some mistakes, but if anyone recognises it then please let me know!!!
Oh and I have just finished nervous conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga, it was great!

Still got 'Hounds of the Morigan' on the go inbetween other books... and listening to the audio version of Diana Gabaldon's 'An Echo in the Bone'.

I am reading What I Loved by Siri Hustvedt in preparation for a broadcast of BBC4's Bookclub in February. I am particularly pleased to have been asked to review this book as I am absolutely loving it and had never come across the author before. By complete coincidence, I am also reading Mad, Bad and Sad, a history of women, mental illness and the mind doctors, which covers much of the same ground as the novel.

There's a great book by Elaine Showalter on the history of women and mental illness as well called "The Female Malady" - very engrossing reading! I recommend it. (Also "The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox" by Maggie O'Farrell is a great novel on this topic).

I'm reading "Dancing Backwards" by Salley Vickers - brilliant!

I read this book a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. It is not always a comfortable read but is handled with sensitivity and grace. I hope you enjoy it. I am reading "The Angel's Game " by Carlos Ruis Zafon at the moment.

I am reading Dead after Dark by Charlaine Harris..... My husband is now sick of me reading vampire books.

Perdido Street Station by China Miéville, and thus far, 300 pages in, it's awesome.

I'm reading PopCo by Scarlett Thomas. It's a great story as well as being thought provoking. Loved The End of Mr Y by her too.

I'm reading 'The Plague Dogs' by Richard Adams, one of my favourite books.

Just Started Dissolution C J Sansom. Bought two of the series & got two from the library. I normally loose interest in series so i shall see how i go. Then if i haven't "Historal fictioned" out it's Wolf Hall if i have it will be something lighter!.

Just finished one book I got for Christmas and about to start another. The first was The Weight of the Evidence (Inspector Appleby Mystery) - enjoyed other books in the series but, although this started well, I thought it ran out of steam well before the end. The latter is The Moving Toyshop (currently very into thirties style crime fiction, but having a sojourn away from female writers) which came highly recommended.

Life of Pi - why didnt I read it years ago?
