Hi,

I'm wondering if any of you kind Kindle owners would be able to help me. I'm really into action / archaeological adventure books ideally set in the rain forest / jungle / lost islands etc. My very favourite authors are Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child and James Rollins and I particularly love both these authors early work. Could anyone out there recommend some new authors for me please.......

Possibly Alistair Maclean, Hammond Innes though may be a little dated as Buchan certainly is. A slight problem with Buchan for modern taste is the ingrained racism - he's liable to describe a positive character as 'a white man' and references to kaffirs and dagoes are common. In the Rider Haggard period there was Kipling's Kim and of course Robert Louis Stevenson e.g. Kidnapped/Catriona, Treasure Island, the Prisoner of Zenda and later the Riddle of the Sands, Conan Doyle's Lost World and his pirate stories.

How about James Clavell? Sho-Gun was very popular. Or Frederick Forsyth's Dogs of War about merceneries in Africa. Or possibly some of Nevil Shute's efforts with Australian settings?

Well of course Buchan is the same sort of period as the Bulldog Drummond books, I think, and those are very 'imperialist' in tone. However, if you can ignore that Buchan's books are good. Maclean and Innes are of a later period, so perhaps miss the 'imperialism' overtones. A number of Maclean' are set during the 2nd WW. They are good adventures.

I'd also recommend anything by Wilbur Smith.

You could try the odd Matthew Reilly novel. You have to be able to ignore all of the problems with his writing and simply allow yourself to be drawn along with the rapid plot. Every one is a bit like a Steven Siegal film in novel form.

Everything asked for in the original posting can be found in most of Wilbur Smith's novels, usually set in Southern Africa.
Another name I would recommend is Bryce Courtney, who, although being Australian, writes many novels about Africa, I can recommend, "The Power of One" and it's sequel, "Tandia", another good one is "Whitethorn"

I just thought of a book that you might enjoy. It's called Ice Bound by Dean Koontz. Koontz doesn't normally write in this genre; however, back in the 1970s he wrote this one novel in the tradition of Alistair MacLean. It well written and entertaining from start to finish. By the way, Alistair MacLean is another one you might enjoy.

You summed it up completely- I think Contest has to be my favourite- Alien v Predator set in a library!Though I now have the urge to go and get a copy of Temple again-jungle, temples, government agencies all set at supersonic pace
