I can't believe that amazon are promoting this book in their kindle monthly deals, when they know that the majority of reviews are fake and misleading.

i read and reviewed this book - wasn't greatly impressed but seemed to be in the minority. What do you expect Amazon to do about it ?

Dawn, what on earth makes you think amazon places more value on doing the right thing than on making a profit?

(For anyone who hasn't come across this rather old news: R. J. Ellory was caught out using sock puppet accounts to write reviews on amazon proclaiming his book, a 'modern masterpiece' and slamming books of other writers. [At the time, as I remember, there was wild consternation amongst James Ellroy fans who felt betrayed.] I doubt very much that all those 5-star reviews were written by Ellory, but who knows? And 1) A person, whether or not he is in fact the author, who proclaims that a book is 'a modern masterpiece' should be gagged with a sputum-soaked handkerchief; 2) A look at Ellory's wiki page makes one wonder and a look at the talk page makes one wonder even more--see the last post there; 3) Yes, Ellory is contemptible. But his books look like candy floss for the brain. Wjy not try to read the sort of book you couldn't pick up at the airport?)

i find Amazon reviews are really helpful if you treat them with due care. I'll always look for a few 3 star reviews with a bit of detail - they're usually so much more accurate thatn wildly glowing but generally non-critical, 5 star reviews or bluntly dismissive 1 star reviews.
I'd forgotten abot the Ellory "scandal". The book is very far from masterful, the second half being a badly written anti-climax after a fairly good start. I've never tried anything else by the author.

I've read a lot of his books and attended talks by him. He came over as a very nice man. Yes what he did was contemptable, but he still is one of the best selling authors around. With his level of success I don't understand why he would NEED to do this.
