I read a book probably 20 odd years ago now and thought I would give a shot in the dark and see if anyone can remember it (as I cannot).

The limited information i have is that the main character was a young guy who over the course fo the series learnt words of power and at one stage had to run 3 days whilst being hunted. I admit this is a serious lack of information. Anyway here's hoping someone else remembers.

Hello, Can I suggest this might be Magician (Riftwar Saga) by Raymond E. Feist. I think this is from around that time, and had a young boy - called Pug.

Magician is a great book and is well worth a read, but I'm pretty sure it's not the one you were asking about.

On the other hand A Wizard of Earthsea might be the book in question. The main character - a boy called Ged - learns words of power (or names to be specific) and is chased by a shadow for some time. Also a great book, and the second book The Tombs of Atuan is even better.
