I saw a book a few years ago in which the book blurb described something like no females had magic (and had no names other than their jobs or roles), but were starting to develop magic. I realise that this is a very sketchy description, but I wondered if anyone knew what book this was? I remember thinking that it was an interesting concept (the no names part at least) but it wasn't what I was looking for at the time. Any help much appreciated! Thanks.

This is not the specific book you're looking for, but somewhat similar in concept -- C.S. Friedman's "Magister" series (starting with "Feast Of Souls: Magister: Book One") series has as one of its premises that only males are capable of becoming sorcerers.

Could it be Piers Anthony's Mode Series? One of the books the ninth daughter (called Nona) of an eighth daugther (I think?) was developing magic unless I'm muddling the books up. Sorry but it's been years since I've read them.

Thanks to you both. I'll check out both suggestions. Haven't read any of CS Friedman before but have heard good things and was an avid fan of Piers Anthony when I was younger, but for some reason haven't read the Mode series, so will need to rectify that!
