Do you know the title of this film?
Allied troops in a German PoW camp. Brit (I think) escapes and, somehow, adopts a cow, and using it as his 'disguise gets away. I think that it ends with him getting onto a train (to freedom?) leaving the cow behind. Possibly in b/w. My now 49 yr old son used to cry when he watched it on TV at 4 yrs old. Can you help?

Could well be the 1969 movie "Hannibal Brooks, starring Oliver Reed. However, it is filmed in colour and it isn't a cow but an elephant named Lucy.

There is a French comedy starring Fernandel made in 1959 called La vache et le prisonnier (meaning The Cow and the Prisoner but tends to be known as The Cow and I). Fernandel stars as a prisoner of war in Germany who escapes using a cow as a decoy. I remember seeing it back in 1964/5 on BBC2 when they used to show foreign films on a Sunday afternoon. I am fairly sure that this is the film though I'm not aware that t is available on DVD here.

I know you can get a DVD from Amazon in France which is Region 2 so will work on your DVD player but I assume this is French only. I'm not aware that an English version is currently available.

Laurence. I am very grateful to you and impressed by your knowledge of the subject. I have Ordered the DVD from amazon.fr and my Son will get it for Christmas - and explain it to his Son. Let's see if he cries at it as his Dad did!! Thanks again!

Thanks for your comments. This film would have been one of the first foreign films I saw and it was one of my late father's favourite foreign films.
