Road/travel reports on radio

Why, oh why, do radio stations deem it necessary to play music(?!) or drum beats whilst giving out road/traffic news?
It's difficult enough to concentrate on what's being said whilst driving, but the repetitive music(?!) or drum beats drowning out what's being said make it almost impossible.
I want to hear the reports, I listen to music the remainder of the time. I've tried asking several radio stations why they do it, but have never received an answer.
It just seems so counter-intuitive drown out what you're broadcasting by making a noise.

eric rambler says:
One of them does a car horn noise which is quite alarming, especially if you are negotiating a busy junction.

Another time a presenter apologised because he could find no traffic problems to broadcast, which to me indicated that he had no understanding of the purpose of his job.
