Boing says:
Once the allocated stock are all placed in people's baskets, the waitlist button appears.
People who click the button then go onto the waitlist in the order in which they clicked.
Obviously there can only be as many places on the waitlist as there is stock allocated to the BF deal.
As people's 15 minute checkout windows expire without payment being made, or when they delete the item from their baskets, people on the waitlist get offered the opportunity to add to basket.
This happens in the order in which they went on the list, until all allocated stock has gone through the checkout, or the deal expires.

1. click button repeatedly in anticipation
2. receive message that waiting list is full
3. insert fist into monitor

The above explanation (Wavelength) is correct. If enough people who originally put the item in their basket don't purchase it, then you may get a chance to buy it. This appears as a pop up on your screen, and you have a short time (it was 15 secs for me) to accept the offer. If you don't accept, then the offer goes to someone else in the queue and your chance will be gone - although you can still re-join the waitlist if it is still open.

This popup can happen minutes or hours after the offer went live so once on the waitlist, it is a bit of a pain in that you have to watch the screen continuously in the hope you get it.
