Ideas for Christmas nibbles

I thought it would be good if we could share some quick, easy and tasty nibbles that we hav found a boon to entertaining over Christmas.
I'll start it off with mini sausages.

I roast cocktail sausages til nice and golden.
Drain the fat from the tin...there is usually a fair bit even though I buy good ones.
Give the sausages a shake and add a couple of good dollops of mango back in the oven to glaze just a few mins..then sprinkle sesame seeds in the pan to sprinkle the sausages..back into the oven for a minute or so....then onto a plate and pop in a cocktail stick.
These always go down really well and everyone seems to like them.

Chunks of chorizo sausage, fried and then splash of sherry cooked off at the end. smoked salmon with wasabi mayo on belini or crostini, quail eggs with celery salt, devils on horseback cant be beaten. Cut out little rounds of shop bought puff pastry, top with garlic mushrooms/spicy tom and chorizo salsa/brie and onion chutney and bake for 10mins (technically a vol au vent but I was a child of the 70's :))

A friend makes amazing parmesan crisps with walnut rubble on the top!

yes I've done the parmesan ones with chilli flakes. Have also done sweet canapes using chocolate, same idea but top with sour cherries, chilli flakes, dried fruit and nut. Use a selection of chocolates too, say white choc with macademia nuts and dark choc and chilli. Roll on christmas

Do you remember when you were small, Pixie? and the real highlight and talking point of any birthday party was how many different layers of jelly your Mum had made?.....How simple was life back then? and how innocent we all were?!.....I feel really sorry for today's generation sometimes?!!

It was a tray full of broken up lime jelly (the grass), into which was stuck sections of banana with a meringue balanced on top of each one to make the mushrooms. In my memory, it was more impressive than any of Heston's Fantastical Feasts.

Oooh Bearman, what a hoot (now, at any rate, I'm sure at the time it was serious stuff.)
I grew up reading Rumer Godden's novel In This House of Brede, in which the Sloane-Rangerish family prepares "Mushrooms in grass" for the going away party...meringue shells on fondant stems in angelica grass on top of choc mousse...somehow that sounds pretty dire now!

See what I started, bring on the retro party....what else can we think of that was popular back in the day.....pigs in blankets, mum used to make jelly creams, using a can of whipped carnation milk instead of some of the water, she made up the jelly and then when it was half set would whisk in the carnation. Pinwheel sandwiches, I think that was another one.

Philadelphia or Potted Meat Pinwheels! and Strawberry Mousse made with Carnation Milk? - just like you said Diamond!.....x

There was usually a Hedgehog Cake made with lots of chocolate buttons for the spine needles! And the 'grass' around my brother's Steam Train Cake was always green-coloured Dessicated Coconut - which I still do today on some of my cakes! And all the carriages were Mini-Rolls, Jaffa Cakes for wheels, all decorated with Dolly Mixtures, Jelly Tots, Liquorice Allsorts, Cadburys Flake and Smarties.

And Fairy Cakes decorated with brightly coloured Hundreds & Thousands? (no Food Police to monitor the food colours back then!) - and always the tiny silver balls that would threaten to break your teeth when you went and crunched on one?!!......

Snowy Rocky Road......cuts into 20 squares.

400g (14oz) white chocolate, chopped // 25g (1oz) mini marshmallows // 50g (2oz) desiccated coconut, plus extra to scatter // 50g (2oz) dried cranberries // 40g (1½oz) pistachios // 50g (2oz) ginger nut biscuits, roughly chopped // some silver balls, optional...!

Line rectangular tin - about 15cm x 20.5cm (6in x 8in) with clingfilm. Put chocolate into microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on full power for 1 min. Stir, then return to microwave for 10 sec bursts until melted and smooth - don't be tempted to give it longer blasts - white chocolate easily burns!

Stir in next five ingredients, then empty into prepared tin and level surface. Scatter over extra coconut and the silver balls, if using - then freeze for 15 mins until solid. Cut into squares and serve.

If you're not serving immediately, chill Rocky Road in fridge until set. Store in fridge wrapped in clingfilm, for up to one week.
