Bearman says:
Reveived an email from colleague in USA effectively saying they disagree with a piece of European legislation and they refuse to supply documentation that I need. Aaaaaarrrrghhh because they refuse to acknowledge its the law over here, and is not optional and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH because this is something I requested in August last year, and they are only telling me now 1 WEEK BEFORE MY DEADLINE. Sorry for shouting but I feel like I have just been stripped, bent over a barrel and somebody is walking towards me with a large pineapple and evil grin.....................

Well the Blindfold is BOGOF so you have one each...He may need it as the sight of you over a barrel may not be what he wants in his head this early in the day!

At the risk of stretching the metaphor too far, I have no intention of being strapped to that barrel when the man with the pineapple reaches me. So I wrote a particularly honest (and abrupt) email, took a coffee break to think about the message before sending it, and then rather being my usual tackful self, and rewriting, I decided to send it as is. It seems I have been writing quite a few potentially career limiting emails to the USA lately. Either it will encourage them to start listening, or they will get rid of me. Right now I would be happy with either outcome!

You did the right thing, Bearman, many US execs don't speak manners--they value "assertiveness" and something they call "attitude". Unless you can pull off the Jane Austen "so polite it's insulting" thing with elegance, you have to just lay it on the line, tell it like it is, and play it the way it lays.
(Welcome to the Orinoco Womble Cliché Festival! LOL)
I do feel your pain. Especially as all of this is via email, it may be "instantaneous" but if you phoned them direct they wouldn't take the call because they don't want to man up and deal with it in person.

Bearman says:
Love the "Jane Austen" phrase, which funny enough probably describes my normal email mode. I'm known for my diplomacy which normally pays results, but just lately it has been ignored. So I am hoping the change in tone may make them sit up and listen, otherwise I'm clearing my desk and moving on.

Bearman says:
Oh I'm not worried - I am well past that stage - more like looking for an excuse to show them they don't know what they are doing, and to give me the impetus to find a new job.

OMG is right, tell you what though, I,ve always found it pays to speak your mind and tell it like it is, in the nicest possible way, of course. It,s only then that people stand up and listen. Good for you.xx

?!?! They 'disagree' with the legislation? I wonder how they'd react if you did the same to them...
