I once heard a UK comic say that the reason they call it Phal is that when you get a mouthful and bite in you sputter, "Ffff....I'll be all right."

I actually like plenty of spice, and although usually will go for something in the mahdras temperature range, I have on occasion gone up to vindaloo without regretting it too much. But the one occasion I tried a tiny bit of a mates phall on the tip on my fork, I was completely unable to taste my own curry after that. For this reason I usually restrict my intake of really hot food to Thai and Indonesian cookery which can blow your head off, but doesn't then linger in the mouth like Indian food.
