One plus I'd give the TV / celebrity books is that they dumbed down enough so that you can get all the ingrediants from just about any supermarket anywhere. You can forget when living in a big city that here out in the country my nearest half decent Asian shop is about an hour's drive away!

At last count I had 32 Indian cookbooks, and I use different boks for different dishes. One book not mentioned so far is Mrs. Balbir Singh's Indian Cookery, published by Mills and Boon in the 1960's. She was obviously a housewife, and the book has notes like "the writer was awarded first prize in the Housewives/Amateurs Section, All-India Citrus Fruit Exhibition" for this recipe. Mrs Balbir Singh's Kashmiri Rogan Josh, Panir Channa Biryani, plain boiled rice are the best I know. But my tandoori chicken comes from Madhur Jaffrey's Invitation to Indian Cooking, my potato raita from Time-Life's Indian Cooking, dhals from Sameen Rushdie's Indian Cookery, which also has an excellent achar gosht and lamb cooked in fresh coriander chutney. Recently I've loved Panjabi's lamb shank curry and Anjum Anand's Punjabi chicken curry . . I don't think there are any BEST books, but there's a lot of very good ones, with reliable recipes which are much much nicer than restaurants, let alone takeaway. Not instant, though.

Isn't it a pity nobody could put all these best recipes in one book? I started to photocopy the ones I liked and put them in a sort eclectic spicy cookbook of my own. Certainly makes life easy when my children have started to ask how I cooked curries they remember. I just recopy my master pages. I suppose I should be using one of those clear envelope books. I'm definately going to search out the indian housewife's book you mention.

The Khalid Aziz book I recommended does have sections on the Regions and Goan would be included in Southern or Wetsren India - but we are only talking about a dozen pages of recipes. But for 1p its worth a look. And this one looks good The Essential Goa Cookbook

Hi I have the charmaine solomon complete Asian Cookbook and covers all regions and I find this book to have just about the best of Indian cuisine it is easy to follow and the recipes are delicouse I think it is sold on Amazon and you can take a peek inside hope this helps...

This is a pre order book but I have a previous book by the same author that I think is now out of print but available second hand on the website. The recipes are fantastic..kicking chicken curry our favourite. The dishes are quick to make and taste fantastic!

I found the Balbir Singh book for 99p - although I have also seeen it online and on sa
e for anything up to £50. You just have to search around.

A very intersting book and very old style - no pictures - reminds me of the books my father would read in the 50's. But the recipes look excellent.

It took me a while to track the book down, but eventually Booksprice UK found it for me here on Amazon UK. I think it was only available on .com previously. The information I have on this book is that it is one of the best books for Indian people who are trying to recreate favourite dishes outside of India. India is a huge diverse (subcontinent) and this book covers many different dishes from the region.

Flavours of India
Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cooking is a good introduction to the cuisine. The recipes are not complicated, and there's a nice introduction to the book, and a basic spices glossary. There are photographs throughout the book showing the finished dish. It is a BBC book and includes many known dishes associated with Indian cuisine. I like the way the book is presented, and understand that the same is now available in a larger format. Some recipes worth trying are Vegetable Pullao and Chicken with Cream. Delicious.
A Taste of India is also a must for anyone interested in the country, culture and the cooking of India. The recipes are a little more unusual, and are grouped according to region. I agree wholeheartedly with G.A. Ferrier that this book has amazing stories about each region. There are fewer photographs of the finished dish, but this book includes photos of the country, people and life in general. A Taste of India includes recipes contributed by people living in each region. Maya's Fish in a Bengali Sauce is well worth making, and the Hyderabadi Pilaf of Rice and Split Peas from the Household of Shah Alam Khan is a keeper.
There are vegetarian recipes throughout each of the books, and different flavourings according to regions are suggested with menus.
An Invitation to Indian Cooking is another must-have. I believe it was her first cookery book, and it is one most people have heard of. It seems to cover everything, and in my opinion it is more like Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cookery It has no photographs at all, but appears to contain more recipes. The sample menus are a great help if you can't decide what dish to cook. Madhur Jaffrey shares the recipes that she grew up with in Delhi and the introductory chapter makes ( 20 pages of) nice reading . The chapter on soups is interesting. I prepared the Potato Soup last week. Vegetables have an entire chapter to themselves, and the spices added to the dishes are both unusual and delicious. Some of these recipes are a little familiar to me, as I also have Simple Indian Cookery and there is a slight overlap with some of the showcased recipes appearing in both books. However, that's not too important.
I cannot compare Madhur Jaffrey's books to "Restaurant Style" Indian cookery books that use "Curry Powder". Indeed there is a reference to this point in the introduction to An Invitation to Indian Cooking which illustrates that pre-blended "Curry Powders" don't exist in India.
While I occasionally enjoy a meal in an Indian Restaurant, I do prefer the kind of meals that might be found in India, and I'm hoping to visit India one day to see for myself!

I would recommend "An Indian Housewife's Recipe Book" I had one years ago and lent it to someone, could not find a replacement anywhere but it is now back in print and available on Amazon, either paperback or Kindle

I've been cooking curries for around 35 years now - and have tried many of the books mentioned in this thread. My aim was to be able to reproduce the British Indian Restaurant taste at home, as opposed to cooking authentic Indian food. I've now achieved this - but none of the books I bought really got me there - Pat Chapman started me off, Kris Dhillon refined my attempts - but it wasn't until I found http://www.secretcurryrecipes.com, and then http://cr0.co.uk/curry/index.php that I really got anywhere close. A couple of members of those sites (CurryBarkingMad and Curry2Go) have now produced their own e-books on the topic - and those have finally helped me achieve my aim! Now that's done, I'm looking into authentic Indian cooking, but it's a different ballgame entirely. I suppose which book is 'best' depends on what you're trying to achieve - but for the money, Kris Dhillon's The Curry Secret is possibly the one I found most useful.

Indian Superfood Indian superfood is by far the best, and healthiest, indian cookbook I own and have several. all the others have become occaisonal use since purchasing this one, truly fantastic. generally quick and easy preparation too. you won't regret it if you decide to buy
