Are halogen ovens worth buying?

I have today watched a demo on a shopping channel for a halogen oven. I nearly bought one as I thought it looked amazing but when I read the reviews they were very mixed. Can anyone advise which they think is the best make please?

I haven't baked cakes in it yet but I've used it for various purposes - roasting chicken, pork and duck, roast spuds, cooking chopss, sausages, gratins, fruit crumbles, baking pastry, etc., with great success. It's a bit long-winded for grilling bacon and if you heat ready meals in it I'd recommend removing the food from the plastic tray and heating in a dish as the containers melt and spill the contents. I have 2 specialist halogen oven cook books which I would recommend because it isn't exactly the same as cooking in a normal, full sized oven.

Do not expect it to be as quick as microwaving. It isn't much quicker than a gas or electric oven apart from the fact that there is no pre-heating required but it is much more ecomomical. Mine came with a "free" extender ring, trays, tongs and racks but you may have to pay extra with some brands of halogen ovens. If you buy one with a removable lid (some are hinged and attached) you need to buy the stand to hold it when you remove it to turn or stir the contents in the middle of cooking.

Best I would think for 1-4 persons and a Christmas turkey wouldn't fit but fine for an average sized chicken or duck.

Further to my comments above. My replacement halogen oven has died - at least its non-replaceable element is shot so that's the end of the oven. However, I have bought another (from Amazon - Andrew James) which has a spare element supplied and further ones are available. Mind you, one door opens and another closes. The shopping channel ones had a hinged lid but the AJ one has a separate lid and a thing to prop it up on when it's removed for stirring or prodding the food. This is a darned nuisance.

Can't add much more to what has been said. Like they say, you need a bit of luck, I bought 2 and my first actually blew up although that sounds more dramatic than the effect in reality. They are fiddly to use in my opinion but I used it frequently for some of the best crispy baked spuds ever and was worth it for them alone as they took little over an hour and as said, more economical. I found it a pain to clean and deal with the top when trying to remove the contents.
If you can spare the cash then give it a try.

We bought one 15 months ago and the halogen bulb went last week. Everyone we know has a similar experience. We cannot buy a new bulb for our oven but the agent will send a new complete top (cost 29 pounds) to Ireland for a further 40 pounds. This about what we paid for the whole unit.
We have decided to throw the unit out and NOT to buy another.

Thanks for your thoughts, I'm interested that you don't think it's quicker but I imagine it's a lot less costly than my gas oven? I', wondering if I would use it other than at first or whether I'd go back to the conventional oven, worth a try perhaps.

Love the idea of the crispy baked spuds, I'm sick of microwaving them to get done in a hurry after work and being disappointed with the results!

Hmm, you could lash out and buy a 'combination microwave oven' which is microwave and grill in one box. The grill is a halogen lamp, the turntable rotates so the grilling is even. You can run the uwave and grill independently or together.
And amongst other things, we do use ours (AEG MCD1762E - built-in and too expensive!) in combination for rapid and yet crispy baked potatoes - twelve-fifteen minutes from cold and inedible to a delicious meal (two average sized baking potatoes).

We've had 2. The bulb died on the first one and as it's so integrated into the lid we just bought a full new one.
In a way, consider it as being a grill with a fan. There's a tendency for it to overcook the top of food while the underneath is undercooked. You need to play with it as there's basically only 2 positions to cook things when you use the high/low stands.
All in all we do use it often for things like pizza/baked potatoes. We only tried cake and bread once, due to the upper being grilled while underneath didnt get hot enough.
Its not that easy to wash. The bowl is big and heavy. The bulb and surrounding metallics get grease splattered which burns on. Hard to clean.
Still, I've bought 2 so far. Not sure if I'll bother with a 3rd, I might stick with my multifunction microwave.

I too am on my 2nd halogen oven and like it for baked spud sausages scones chops etc but yes unless it is wiped clean immediately you have finished with it the mess will cook on.The bowl is very heavy so not suitable for the elderly or weak person and you need a wide worktop and a space between work top and cupboard to allow for space for the top to lean back especially when turning food or removing it when you need both hands.
It takes up a great deal of work surface so unless you intend to leave it on the work top a large cup board will have to be found to house it each time.I use mine all the time so leave it out. It does cook all round so saving turning sausages etc and it does roast potatoes a treat.
My first one did not have a hinged lid so I am finding this one a joy to use as you do not have to look for a spot to lay the top whilst dealing with the food.
I do not think I would buy another as A. I am getting on in years and with arthritis I am finding it hard to lift the bowl for cleaning purposes. B. I found it quite expensive to buy but thought it would help me and C. I really could not afford another neither could I afford to have this one repaired. Apart from all that it does have it's good points and makes a really nice sponge cake but that needs good judgement to adjust the cooking time.If asked to rate out of ten I would give it somewhere in the 7.5 area.

I purchased a small one to take away on holiday with my family when we go self catering (in the UK) to as many larger ovens in apartments and lodges do not get to temp quickly nor do some seem ever to get to the temp they should. The two large ovens I can cook a full xmas lunch for five with no problems, to say I like mine would be an understatement.

The only product I dont cook in mine because we dont like the way it cooks is pizza or garlic bread for that I use my big fan oven but roast that chicken its juicy tasty and quicker.

I have also had my ovens many years now have had no problems whatsoever maybe I have been extra lucky or those who replied above have been very unlucky.

I was bought one almost two years ago as a present and my daughters both said "another boy's toy" and will be packed away with the fondue set. WRONG! Best thing I have ever had, use 3/4 times a week for everything (except cakes). Results are brilliant, my cooker oven is redundant and my electricity bills well reduced. Pizza and Garlic bread come out brilliantly as do real chips or oven chips (no frying).
Take the plunge and get one.

We have had two of these, purchased from different shopping channels. The first was from ideal world and was the one with the lid attached. Brilliant until that is the element blew. It had lasted just under a year but couldn't be replaced due to no stock. We got our money back and bought from another channel. This time we have the one with the removable lid. Have had it ages and when it eventually goes wrong will replace it. I prefer the one with the attached lid. It does everything that is demonstrated on the TV and is easy to get the hang of. We haven't used our normal oven for years now.....no need. Just buy it, you wont regret it, you'll wonder how you ever got by without it.

I have had a halogen oven for nearly two years now. I ablolutely love it and the normal oven is rarely on. All I use my normal oven for is biscuits ( can't be bothered to do small batches) and if I want to do something like a big lasagne or the Christmas turkey which won't fit in the halogen, however I do use it to supplement the main oven by doing things like the stuffing or sausages at Christmas. I have cooked small cakes and scones which I can make and have cooked in 15 minutes ( they have timed me! ). Part baked rolls, garlic bread and pizza are realy quick and come out lovely. Meats, chicken, sausages,bacon all cook realy well, it seems to keep the food realy juicy and not dry. I do use a small meat themometer which I find realy useful as you can check when it is cooked inside and if it is getting too brown, turn it down. Also you can see the temperature without taking it out of the oven. I have tended to use the oven at a lower temperature than most of the recepies say and it is a matter of experimenting.. I think it is better to cook slightly longer and not risk things being underdone in the middle. I have one with a removable lid as I saw someones comment which said unless you have a counter with no cupboards above it can be tricky to find room to lift it up. I usually just put the lid on whichever of the cooking racks I am not using.
Negatives are I am now on my third oven. The bulbs have gone both times just under a year old. However I did take out a 3 year guarantee and each time have received a new oven! However when this one is out of guarantee I will buy a model which allows me to buy and replace the bulb yourself, as I hate being without it while it has to go back.
All in all I wouldn't be without one of these now and rave about it to everyone. Great for up to 4 people, More would probably struggle with the quantities you could fit in. My 18 year old daughter wants me to buy her one to take to university as she is hooked as well and can never be bothered to wait for our main oven to heat up. Also our electricity bills have gone down which can't be a bad thing!

I've had mine for about 18 months and would not be without it, I can count on 1 hand the number of times my main oven has been used in that time. I got mine from Ideal World shopping channel and is their own brand with the lift up lid. I use it virtually everyday and have had no problems so far. If and when it does cease to work I will defernitely get another.

I have also baked successfully in mine and its great for reheating things like pies and suasage rolls which go limp in a microwave. I also like it to do cheese on toast. The clean up is really easy and I would definitely recommend buying one.

I find it easier to place lid on top of my toaster instead of the lid holder,and it also warms dinner plates which i place on top of the toaster.

my partner and i bought one of these for our motorhome as it didnt have an oven already. we cooked jacket potatoes and full english breakfast in it and even managed one of those supermarket takeaway indian meals for two (although we had to keep swapping containers around to ensure evenly cooked) but the absolute best thing is belly pork joints, the crackling on them is the best i've ever had. they are a nightmare to clean best advice is every time you take the lid off wipe inside of lid with damp cloth.
