X-Men Days of Future Past, rereleased in trade paperback in Deember 2012, it's set in a dystopian future where the sentinels rule. You may need to read a few stories before to get yourself to care about the characters, but good stuff. One proviso, I am English and we are obsessed with dystopian futures, Orwell 1984, all of Quatermass...

Also, check out From the Ashes which deals with the follow up to the Dark Pheonix Saga and introduces some classic X men stories like the Morelocks and Rogue joining the team X-Men: From The Ashes TPB

Alternatively, pick up the Essential X men series as all of Claremont's stories up to about #200 (volume 6) are pure gold and are still being recycled in the comics/films/ tv shows today: Essential X-Men Volume 1 TPB (New Printing): v. 1

There are two tpb's that cover the earliest Phoenix stories:
Marvel Masterworks: The Uncanny X-Men Volume 2 TPB (Marvel Masterworks the X-Men)
X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga (New Printing) TPB

I've recently started reading comics, I have always liked the odd stand-alone graphic novel, but I've started getting into the Marvel universe. Anyway, I've read the Astonishing X-Men run and Civil War, it was all a bit confusing to begin with but I'm getting to grips with it. I would like to learn more about Phoenix and the earlier Marvel events, I really don't know where to start. Any essential reads?
