Can't believe it, he was only 56! Treasure to watch as The New Statesman, and as the narrator on Grimm Tales among other programmes. He'll be sorely missed.

Deeply shocked at this news. I know he had that near fatal quad bike accident about 16 years ago and I suppose it's possible that he may never have fully recovered. I saw him in a production of Simon Gray's play The Common Pursuit in the West End back in the late 80's and he was every bit as powerful a presence on stage as he was on screen. The world has lost a truly great comedy actor. One of the very best.

The end of the B'Stard, such sad news...he said he was living on borrowed time after that awful quad bike accident a few years ago. Thanks for the laughs RM.

Really really sad news. Had a tear in my eye when I heard it on tv last night. Such a funny guy. Bottom's one of my all-time fave comedies. Loved him in The Dangerous Brothers as well. RIP Rik.

Heard this morning that US comedian/actor Tracy Morgan's in Intensive Care in hospital following a traffic accident on Saturday morning (fellow comedian Jimmy Mack was killed). Saw him on an episode of Tanked just yesterday morning and he seems like a lovely funny bloke. Hopefully he'll pull through. He's got a Fiancee and 4 kids, the youngest being a wee baby.

Affixed to a road barrier across Hammersmith Broadway there is now a blue plaque which reads....

Won't bring him it back...but it's kind of fitting!

I also liked Ade Edmonson's 'tribute'....

"There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing.

"They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him.

"And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish b*****d."

This news made me genuinely sad, and in quite a selfish way disappointed that there won't be any more comedy involving Rik. I was looking forward to Rik and Ade's old men series of Bottom, and always hoped there'd be another Four Men episode of Comic Strip - probably my favourite thread within CSP. Would be totally impossible to write another without Rik's Alan character.
Even people who didn't really like his comedy seem upset by his death. Think he was loved as a person.

Hard to imagine alternative comedy having happened without him and, for better or worse, that's what a lot of us grew up on. His role as the Dad in Man Down - his last TV part I suppose - was in many ways a return to his anarchic early stuff. It's sad in a way to see the enthusiasm for him now he's dead, when for years nobody had let him actually make any programmes; but maybe he'd shot his bolt a while back. Aside from Young Ones, Filthy Rich & Catflap, Bottom, etc, Mr Jolly will always be one of my favourite comedies. RIP.
