John, you'll see that the debate has in fact centred on the words you actually used. If you can explain how your actual reference to "ignorance or disinterest" does not include all people with the kind of conservative tastes to which you were referring, I am equally willing to apologise.

John, if you're at all interested in what "HC asserts" you'll see it for yourself in the thread in question. I need hardly say that it bears no resemblance to the above version of it.

No, he simply doesn't. He doesn't contradict it either.

Hi guys. Sorry I've been out awhile and I'm a bit lost. I will try to look at the thread (which has grown substantially) and figure out what I might want to say in the hope of making myself better understood

Tchitcherine:

Have just read your post of http://www.amazon.co.uk/forum/classical%20music/ref=cm_cd_et_md_pl?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx2OIXGG1AOK3Z9&cdMsgID=Mx37OJ0YH5YBF3S&cdMsgNo=47&cdPage=2&cdSort=oldest&cdThread=TxKUS95JHLXSFZ#Mx37OJ0YH5YBF3S and yes, I would support that as a more precise formulation of the point I made, probably too casually.

HC: Regarding 'ignorance and disinterest'. Well I guess I can't deny that I intended to make the strong judgement that an inherent danger of any kind of conservatism is that it typically cultivates a disinterest that cannot help but result in some degree of ignorance. Again though, there's nothing implicitly wrong with disinterest and ignorance - we all have things of which we choose to cultivate ignorance ignorancebecause of our disinterest. Problems only arise when we come to make pronouncements or judgements on such issues without being aware of the shaky ground we are on.

I have some discomfort with what you seem to be saying. Please clarify. Someone who refuses to listen to something has chosen avoidance. I have tried some types of music/composers and dislike them.
Is this the same as ignorance in your mind?

Indeed JR - you are spot on with your question.

Within the original thread, which you quote, JF has recently referred to people cultivating ignorance.
Now there's a wierd concept. Deliberately accumulating ignorance!

One thing is for sure though. Many people have obviously become embarrassed to admit or accept that CM is or ever was under the A/G shadow or that their own tastes might have naturally been shaped by that tradition. Yet even JF has accepted it as a de facto state of affairs which even persists to this day in Berkshire and Hampshire!

The Sixth Declension goes like this...
*I* am eclectic.
*We* like a reasonable range of evolving music types.
*You* have narrow, and rather conservative tastes in comparison with me.
*They* like a load of derivative rubbish which is beneath my attention.

Vaslav and JJD

Thank you for your posts and I think I would be better off trying to live within my own reactions to things rather rather than obsess about others thoughts. Listening to music is more interesting to me than super analysizing it besides my BRAIN is not what I use most with music. It is my ears and heart.

I taught philosophy and I am a trained paralegal and am a reading geek who compulsively digs and digs into Religion, Politics and Law.

For me Music is much needed MENTAL VACATION.

With sincerest regrads to both of you and my fellow thread travelers. Be well, live long and happy.
