Have they ever tempted you into a purchase?

I cite this as an example of one which might do just that!

Peteris Vasks: Symphony No. 3; Cello Concerto [Hybrid SACD]

Thanks for reminding ma, JJD. I have a Vasks CD in the drawer that I haven't listened too for ages. I'll listen to it tomorrow.

'Twas only an example, Gordon, but (pray tell me!) which one have you hidden away?

I have to admit to buying quite a few of the available CDs on Amazon from hearing the 30 second snippets at 64 kbps (ephemeral speed)

Don't usually bother, to be honest. The one time I did "try before you buy", I was actually put off the purchase altogether!

I usually listen to them to get a rough idea of the performance or the recording quality. For something absolutely new I try and use Spotify though I sometimes follow the advice of the good people in this forum.

It's the second string quartet on a disc with Erkki-Sven Tüür's string quartet and Arvo Pärt's Fratres: Baltic Elegy - String Quartets by Vasks, Tüür & Pärt. I have taken a punt on a few CDs on the basis of the samples, and have also decided against buying some on the same basis. I find them quite useful, although allmusic.com and rdio.com have better coverage.

I have learned not to trust an impression formed on a 30 second sampler - except for a vague impression about the sound quality for historical recordings. I agree the Vasks link that you provided, JJ, is appealing. I got a bit tired of all Vasks' pieces sounding a little the same but the samples on your link do sound more interesting. But, there again, I don't trust 30 second samples!

No - never bothered to even look at things like this - I usually buy music I might have heard on Radio 3 or more often these days, I buy music that I am actually going to perform.

A bit like speed-dating.
Mostly a ridiculous idea; but occasionally produces a beauty!

It's helped my explorations of the more obscure areas of jazz, contemporary and electronica. I've made numerous speculative purchases based on such clips and I would estimate that less than 5% have proved complete duds. They've also served to warn me off of recordings by artists I have previously enjoyed but who've gone off the boil or changed direction to regions I'm less interested in.
