As a primary school we are looking to do a topic on castles. Would welcome any ideas for novels/short stories for children from 4 to 11.

Thanks. E Nesbit's book would be especially good for our older children.

Not stories exactly but Castles by Colin Thompson is full of wonderful illustrations of castles which would inspire the imagination of younger pupils.

Primary school covers a pretty wide age range, but we have enjoyed these books:

Project X Code - Castle Kingdon - set of 4 and you do need all 4. (Part of a phonics programme, but fun stories)

Iron Hans Grimms' Fairy Tales This is a really beautiful version of the story:
Iron Hans (Grimms' Fairy Tales)

These two could suit a wide age range:
Tales of King Arthur (Usborne Library of Fear, Fantasy & Adventure)
I would also recommend Usborne's See Inside Castle.

For children - 7+ we really liked Oxford's Reading Tree's Tower of London. I believe there is a Horrid History book on castles as well.

For the 4s you could try some picture books with castle settings eg.
Meg's Castle, Jan Pienkowski,
Castles , Colin Thompson
Creepy Castle , John Goodall but out of print
Ready Steady Ghost, Baguley/Lindsay
Shhh! Grindley/Utton
Creaky Castle , Jane Clarke
In the Castle , Melbourne/Davies
David Melling pic. Books eg. The Three Wishes

Just off the top of my head but can probably come up with more.

Don't want to offend anyone by promoting on this thread, but if you're interested, check on the 'meet the authors' forum, under children's titles for a free school story about a visit to a castle, loosely based on a famous English castle.
