Books for 9 year old boy, reading age 13

Can anyone help me with some new books for my son to read, he is 9 with a reading age of 13. He loves Roahl Dahl, David Walliams, Andy Stanton, Jeff Kinney, Dav Pilkey so anything else along those lines would be perfect.

Try "Little League Heroes". It is a great story for a young boy. Sure, it is a baseball book, but the social situations and drama of a young boys life are very evident and the manner in which they deal with them so real.

Give 'Brian, His Granddad & the Cup of Ages' a try. Available in paperback and as a Kindle download. Very similar to Rick Riordan. Alternatively, 'The Ghost of Thomas Kemp' or books such as 'The Hobbit'...

Try some of the Alan Garner books... my 10 yr old is going to get some for Christmas as I read them at the same age and have never forgotten them! Just brilliant...always loved The Weirdstone of Brisingamen and The Moon of Gomrath or try The Wind Eye by Robert Westall of the machine gunners fame, another favourite.

Good luck and you will probably end up reading them too (Garner has since written a sequel to weirdstone & gomrath called Boneland which is set 40 years later when the characters are 40 years older).

All goods authors and my child likes very similar books. He does like the how to train the Dragon because of the humour and Chris D'lacey books. I think the Rick Riordan books which my daughter of the same age reads are good books. Horrible Histories have loads of totally fabulous books of for different interests.

My son loved the Diamond Brothers books (before moving onto Alex Rider), also SpyDog/Pups and Mr Gum (both quite easy but very funny). Also some of the Michael Morpurgo books, especially Born to Run. Young Bond also went down well.

It used to be difficult to find good books for more advanced readers (higher level language whilst age suitable stories), but there do seem to be many more around these days. You could try asking your school librarian for recommendations too - ours was very helpful with our son.

Hi Ellie, I'm not sure if it's polite to suggest my own book, but you might like to have a look at Land Of Light and Shadow.
Also, I'd suggest the Pulman Dark Materials books and The Hobbit.
