Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for my 3 year old daughter? She can read very well for her age, certainly post reception year things, probably year one or two. She's anxious to start reading chapter books, but I want something that will really engage her and keep her attention. She doesn't like dogs and I don't really fancy reading Rainbow Magic with her as my other daughter has only just finished reading 70 of those to me! Many thanks!

K. Hayhoe says:
You could try Magic Puppy, you should be able to tell from the preview if it's too scary for her.
Princess poppy books are age-appropriate but she'd probably need a bit of help with it (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Princess-Poppy-Birthday-Picture-Books/dp/0552558540/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1309714902&sr=8-5#reader_0552558540)
Mermaid SOS are probably the closest to rainbow magic in terms of reading level and age-appropriateness. Mermaid SOS - 6 book collection pack - Misty to the Rescue / Ellie and the Secret Potion / Sophie Makes a Splash / Holly Takes a Risk / Scarletts New Friend / Lucy and the Magic Crystal rrp £23.94 (Mermaid S.O.S)
Have fun . . .

Thanks for your reply. She already has the Princess Poppy books, as her grandma bought them for her, as the author is her neighbour! She isn't particularly keen on dogs, my eldest does have an unread copy of one of the Magic Puppy books, so I'll have a closer look at that. I will also investigate the Mermaid SOS books, as those sound the most suitable. Thank you for your help! x

A Hare's Talethis is only on Kindle, but was aimed at five and above, you might try a sample, and it has had some good feedback too.

Thanks for your suggestion, I'll check the sample out, as I own a Kindle. x

What about Winnie the Pooh?

Jill Tomlinson's books.

What about Jill Tomlinson, The Owl who was afraid of the Dark? or others. Lots of Dr Seuss books like Green Eggs and Ham are fun if you haven't read them all yet, The Magician's boy by Susan Cooper, The Man Who Wore All His Clothes by Allan Ahlberg, and the Bullysaurus books by Damon Burnard. Sorry you got stuck with all the rainbow magic books, I would avoid all books that you would not equally give to a boy, good writing transcends gender so it's a quick way of weeding out books that are not well written.

I would reccommend The Worst Witch (Young Puffin Story Books) and Roald Dahl, probably staring withFantastic Mr Fox and George's Marvellous Medicine.

How about the Beatrix Potter books.

Try the Little House on the Prairie 'chapter' books (not the original novels). Great stories and very informative.

There is also a range of LHonP books that are closer to picture books.

Hi. Both my five and two year-olds love listening to the Julia Donaldson books (The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, etc) and the 5 yo (in Reception) will have a fairly good attempt at reading them herself. Perhaps your daughter would enjoy being "helped" with these?

Ralph books are pretty good - can be read by the child alone and also they are good for learning word sounds as they are stories written in poetryRalph is (not) a Superhero: 1Ralph is (not) a VampireRalph is (not) a Spy

Does she like ponies? My daughter moved on to the Magic Carrousell books after the Rainbow Magic Series. Same style of reading, but something different for you to listen to.

Try the seriously silly fairy tales by L Anholt and A Robbins. Especially Daft Jack and the Bean Stack and Eco Wolf and the Three Pigs.

Why not try my book 'Gruvel the Great'? If your daughter goes on my website www.lsydneyabel.com she will see Gruvel for herself and hopefully she will like him enough to want to read his story. For children aged 4-9 years. [ASIN:1907552022 Gruvel the Great (Nightingale)]
Available on Amazon.co.uk

How about War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy?
My daughter read this when she was eight months old and then moved on to Dostoevsky.

Witches, Hats and All That

This book is out soon - new book - new author (me). Story is told in rhyming verse and has some slightly complicated words but I believe getting the little people interested in language as early as possible. I think it's great that you are reading with your daughter - if every parent read to / with their child there would be no illiterate children.

Have you looked at the "Daisy and the trouble with" books? My daughter loved these and they are definately age appropirate. The sam character as the picture books but as a chapter book. I think it's Kaz Clarke. George Speaks by Dick KIng Smith is also good.

I have just bought 10 traditional tales retold by Berlie Dougherty for my grandson. They are a comfortable size and length for little hands and although the tales are familiar they are made beautiful and memorable in the telling.
