S. R. Tulip says:
buddy guy- his controll over the instrument is great and his incredible improvisation skills make his music exciting and interesting. Buddys style is unique( as is many other blues artists such as albert king, freddy king, albert collins).

One of the best and underated blues guitarists that is still touring is Sherman Robertson, I had the pleasure of seeing Sherman last weekend at the Ripley Blues Club in North Yorkshire, his performance was one of the best I have seen in the last decade. Long may he continue to tour the UK, we could do with some more like him; his UK band are the best blues act you'll see this year.

Jb Spreckley says:
Yes Rory is a standout amongst so many great players all with their own voices....... maybe there is no "best" but Rory, Peter Green, Albert King, John Hammond, would be up there!

I love dearly Robert Cray and Robben Ford - stunning sets of albums from each of them - and I can't choose between them for my fave!

I love Sherman, Rory, Albert, BB, Buddy, Greeny, Hammond, Collins - and have been lucky to see them all live and of course Eric, BB and Jimi have to be on the 'greatest' list by any means.

Ain't it hard to say anyone is really 'the best?' as their styles are all diverse and fabulous in their own way.

Long live the blooooz!

For once I agree with you SRT, he is an absolutely stunning player. Thank you ;-)

Hammerwood says:
O.K. so we are all agreed Buddy Guy is a great BLUES guitarist AND singer.
Perhaps some of you might care to inform 'someone' on another allied
BLUES thread........ of this blatantly obvious fact. Believe you me, I have
already tried, honest I have. Back-up required!

R. Pini says:
Yeah well...Buddy is THE MAN, even if his live shows are getting a bit tedious sometimes, especially when he stretches out some of the songs to perform his (old and worn out) antics. But his is undoubtedly a body of work that commands respect. Among the many unsung heroes of The Blues Guitar, I really like Eddie 'Playboy' Taylor, a wonderful session man who also got to record some of his own stuff. Try 'Are you ready for Eddie' if you can find it.

Brass Neck says:
OK he's not THE greatest blues guitarist but as an authentic finger-style acoustic country blues player, Rev Peyton (& His Big Damn Band) has some sublime skills nowhere more evident than live (saw them last night) and on the new album of mostly solo recordings of Charlie Patton songs Peyton On Patton - read the very good customer review if you don't believe me.

I read all of the above posts and felt as if I had slipped into a parallel universe in which nobody has ever heard of either Stevie Ray Vaughan or Johnny Winter or Gary Moore, who all leave many of these names in the shade. (I'm not including Hendrix, Clapton and Buddy Guy in that!)

In no particular order:

BB King
Albert King
Buddy Guy
Albert Collins
Peter Green
T-Bone Walker
Johnny "Guitar" Watson (check out "Hot Little Mama" - one of the greatest string-benders of all time)
Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown
Jimi Hendrix

R. Pini says:
It' s just that Texas Blues is a bit much sometimes. Both SRV and JW play a lot of notes, they just keep on coming! It is a real avalanche of sounds, compared to the more restrained Chicago Blues style where less is often more. Gary Moore was a good technician who never came up with an original idea of his own, nice guy and all though, R.I.P.

Droneonandon says:
Have to agree with R. Pini. I have seen many blues guitarists over the years. While allways enjoying Walter Trout(seen 6 times) and others playing Texas blues, it is the more simple style of blues that really pays off. Never saw Jimi Hendrix, but his live version of "Bleeding Heart" is perfection. Peter Green on "Jumping at Shadows"(saw him play this in 1970). It's the abillity to completely transfix you with a single note that sets these and others like them apart

Just thought I would add Paul Kossoff to the other two

Good on you Brass Neck. Would have to agree on you there. Saw The Reverend Peyton in Novemeber and live they are awesome. Some voice he has and even playing two tunes at the same time on guitar is a nice little party piece.
Sorry but for me there is no best blues guitarist, too many types of Blues but another favourite of mine is Mississippi John Hurt.

Joe Bonamassa, Tab Benoit, Jimmy Vaughan, Jimmy Thackery. I like all of these, give them a try.

Sorry, but I just don't rate these white guys all that much. For me they are just copycats.Yes, they can rip off an Elmore James lick but they lack the emotion and feeling of real blues musicians. To name the best guitarist is mission impossible. There are so many great blues guitarists from different regions with different styles, from country blues to the harder electrified city blues. Just now I'm playing an electrified Muddy Waters from 1948-1949.Wow!!

A doff of the jauntily placed Panama must go to Sam "Lightnin' Hopkins.
