last year bought a surround sound kit with a dvd player built in to the speaker reciever box but want to connect a bluray player into the reciever box to allow surround sound.
Firstly, how? and only have one hdmi port which at the moment connects the tv to the surround sound/dvd.there is a scart socket, will that work?

A good thing to check is wether the blu-ray player and the surround sound both have 'Optical' sockets (Google it if you need to see what it looks like). If they do, get an optical cable and connect them up. Not only will this reroute the sound from the bluray player into the surround sound, but it will sound amazing, as optical generally increases sound quality. Hope this helped :)

Hopefully your system will have an optical input, or at worst, coaxial.

Annoyingly, many standard definition home cinema setups don't have additional inputs any more, but you may be lucky.
Adding a scart won't work.

Most Blu-ray players will have a optical or digital connection. Your sound system may not have the inputs because it has a DVD player built in some do some don't. If you have a new TV it should have a digital out so the sound from the Blu-ray player and the TV will go to your Home Cinema. If you only have one HDMI connection on your TV then I assume your DVD is and upscalling model then there isn't really much chance if it doesn't have the inputs, although it might have phono stereo inputs it's not ideal but your system might have Pro Logic or DTS Neo 6 which will give you a pseudo surround.

If you wanted to upgrade there are many amps available Sony do good value models just make sure you have enough HDMI inputs on the reciever say 3-4 (ps3, blu-ray and sky hd) most should have this in the £200-250 range depending on your speaker connections you could use your original speakers but some have different connections (especially the sub).

Also check to make sure your amp/reciever supports the new sound formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD and some of the cheaper models will have 7.1 as oppossed to 5.1 you may not use the extra 2 or even 4 channels (with 9.1) but shop around so you have the option. richersounds.com have some great bargains on amps/recievers on-line as well as instore only offers. I bought my Yamaha there a good few years ago and it's still going strong (although with the glossy piano black finishes on tv's these days it and it's speakers look out of place been silver).
