Do you agree that, after the Bible, A Cypress Walk by Alun Lewis is the best book in the World?

I am completely bowled over by this author.

No - because I haven't read the book or heard anything about it.

Bit of a leading question...

No. In a word.

Do you agree that, after your message, this is the silliest and most presumptuous message in the world ?

Rather an unusual posting; like "crazy diamond" I've never heard about this book, but it seems hard to imagine that it is truly the second-greatest book ever written. Perhaps the original poster could enlarge on the theme by explaining why they found this work so extraordinary?

Gladly. Long after reading the book, the profound thoughts on war, life and love shake one. His expressive powers are so very very deep. No exaggeration to say it's the best book after the Bible. Alun Lewis's poetry is SUPERB also. It is like being inside his head when reading it. A good example of this is "The Marriage Bed" in his "Collected Poems". As for the poem "The Map" on p 16 of "The Cypress Walk" - I cannot think of anything more beautiful. Even writing this entry makes me feel very emotional. Sou'Wester - Life is worth it just to read that one poem. I cannot stress this enough.

Thanks for the information "Realms of Gold". Must show my total ignorance now and reveal I hadn't heard of Lewis (initially I thought this was one of those awful self-plugging threads) but your comments and some cursory googling reveal him as a fine poet and certainly worth further investigation. Doubt if I'll end up going as far as ranking "The Cypress Walk" quite as highly as you suggest, but I can now see how work such as this could move the reader. And it is pleasant to see something really worthwhile being brought to the attention of forum users.
