The Chieftain: Victorian True Crime Through the Eyes of a Scotland Yard Detective You might like to try my very-recently published biography of Detective Chief Inspector George Clarke (aka The Chieftain) who was (as a sergeant) the arresting officer in the Thomas Briggs murder case in 1864, was also briefly a colleague of Inspector Whicher and co-operated with him in the Tichborne Claimant case. The book describes and analyses all Clarke's major cases (including his own trial for corruption) between 1862 and 1878.

You might want to consider Ronnie Biggs' autobiography, "Odd Man Out: The Last Straw", which was published on 17 November 2011.

You could try my new book about the unsolved murder of a nurse on a train in 1920. It's called The Nightingale Shore Murder. Scotland Yard were called in at the time but couldn't solve the crime. Then a new theory came up in the last ten years that really opens everything up again. The Nightingale Shore Murder

Killing For Company,The Only Living Witness,Lethal Marriage....that is a shocking book concerning Paul Bernado,Wicked Beyond Belief,To Die For,Rodney Alcala.I also have read one concerning Jack Unteweggar a serial killer who was a writer that became a figure in high society.Sorry i am naming books off the top of my head,i apologise for lack of detail.
What i will say is these bunch are dark and have strong narrative threads.Lethal Marriage was a real heavy read.Evil stuff.
There was another one about a guy called Scott Peterson who murdered his wife A Deadly Game.
All these books are worthwhile reading if you like true crime,a genre i find morbidly fascinating but guilty about reading.

The Jack Unteweggar book mister joe refers to above is probably The Vienna Woods Killer by John Leake. I would second this suggestion, I found this book fascinating.

A Deadly Game by Catherine Crier, also mentioned by Mister Joe is about the Scott and Laci Peterson case and is also a brilliant book on a fascinating case. Also a good suggestion and well worth a read.

I've already posted about 501 Most Notorious Crimes (True Crime) by Paul Donnelley. I thought I'd give it another mention since it's now at the reduced price of £6.19 on Amazon. At this price its a bargain. I don't know how they can sell this very high quality book for this price and still make a profit. It would also make a great Christmas gift for any true crime fan.

P.S. I've no connection with Paul.
