Ok to mention a book in a genuine conversation if it is to do with the conversation for those authors(i'm assuming) but for blatant advertising, the new writers forum is excellent. . . Those readers that wish to read new material by fresh authors can seek out such material there and also, in the new writers forum, people have the ability to publicly talk about a writers work with the writer, so it is a win win situation surely?

A.S. Self-promotion is permitted and indeed encouraged in the Meet Our Authors forum. All Amazon have done is to stop the general forums being swamped by advertising, which was making them virtually useless to customers seeking genuine discussions.

Like you Lizzie Scott is also self published through Amazon in the States as paperback and UK in kindle...how are new authors to get known if they can't advertise through these forums...Laurie...I'm going to look for your book :-)

Ouch.

Another persepctive: I'm a self-published author and I enjoy my work. I wrote my book myself, edited it (I'm not claiming perfection here) myself, published it myself and am doing all the promotion myself. It's a lot of fun. E-books are here to stay and I don't mind having Amazon/Kindle behind mine.

Additionally, if it wasn't for self-publishing I wouldn't have found myself on this UK site and wouldn't have met so many nice and interesting people. Btw, I did sell a few copies of my book in the UK and I don't have any relatives there.

You're so right, Monica.

I clicked on this thread expecting to see nothing but self-promotion. Thank goodness, it's a long time coming. Nothing more dull than self-published vanity press authors desperately trying to sell a copy to someone who's not related to them.

And of course, these posts are usually dull and uninteresting - meaning that those copies go unsold. As they deserve to be judging by the quality of the writing of these self-penned adverts.

Hurray!

Jolly good luck--this forum seems such a back-road that advertising continues unchecked on some threads. As for this thread, I wouldn't be interested in anything written by anyone so self-absorbed and devoid of observational powers as the advertisers here; how on earth could someone like that create a character with a shred of credibility?

Amazon's announcement at the head of this thread states that self promotion should be confined to the "Meet Our Authors" forum and that it should not encroach on general discussion forums as this. Probably the easiest way to access the MOA forum is to scroll down to the bottom of this page; there you should find this included under the heading "Most Active Community Forums".

series of links gave me the impression this was the ONLY place authors are allowed to self-promote!

Am I missing something here? This thread is headed up by Amazon announcing that self-promotion is NOT permitted in these forums and, lo and behold, we have writers using this very thread to indulge in plugging their work!!

Amazon recently created a new community for authors. The `Meet Our Authors' community is designed to give authors a space to engage with one another and promote their latest and greatest works.

With the advent of the new community, we will no longer allow self-promotional posts in other communities. Starting on December 15, 2011, all "shameless self-promotion" activity will be limited to the `Meet Our Authors' community. Promotional threads outside of these forums will be removed.

We invite authors and interested readers to come join the discussion at:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/forum/meet%20our%20authors

We look forward to seeing you!
