Dear All - I have a new baby boy and my partner and I have had some difficulties with settling him - I know what you're thinking - "He's a baby, then!" - but we have also had some colic treatments from the doctor which has helped a lot.

We're fascinated by products that can help to calm and fascinate our little one - and here are a few of our best finds. Please add the products you have found helpful to this post.

Visual Baby This one is a lifesaver - it grabs my little one's attention immediately and almost always calms him - and the price is right!

Bright Starts Fun on Safari Portable Baby Swing Not cheap, but great to calm down baby. Music is okay but a bit annoying after a while!

The Original Sophie the Giraffe Teether Toy Ridiculously cute and entrances baby - very soft and easy to squeak!"

Tomy Starlight Dreamshow Let's just say Baby likes this more than I do, but it's undeniably effective!

Simply blowing some bubbles can help calm them before they get to complete frenzy stage lol

Happymama says:
I found that my baby was much much easier to settle after I cut out a bunch of things that caused her wind from my diet. (Only useful if you're BF) The list is long but the change was astronomical. Here's most of them. Hope it helps.

Broccoli/Cauliflower
Cabbage
Cheese
Nuts
Cherries, Berries, Plums, Tomatoes, Peppers (anything with that kind of 'skin')
Onions
Garlic
Fizzy drinks
Caffeine

Just a thought, cause its hard work when they're uncomfortable all the time. If you're bottle-feeding try the anti-colic drops from Boots. One drop in the bottle seems to make a lot of difference helping them break down the milk.

We also have ''easy digestion tea'' which is formulated especially for colic problems. baby and children teas are commonly used on continent and are not so well known in UK. This manufacturer is however approved by Ministy of Health in CZ and their medical and baby teas tend to be available in pharmacies as well as in supermarkets. Any queries please contact me.

Hi,
Just rule out any underlying cause for his screaming! My little one screamed for weeks before being diagnosed with reflux and cmpi!! Not much does settle these babies, just time!!

With my first baby we had a portable light projector for the ceiling, we swore by it and it's ghreat for if you go away too, my baby would sleep anywhere when we put that on because he associated it with bedtime!

:)

we had this problem too and also changed to comfort milk which helped a lot. also, he had reflux so unless i wanted to sit still after every feed for a good 20 mins i got a baby carrier which i could walk around with, good for the day time!

We have also found that comfort milk and infant gaviscon has made a big difference, although we still see some sickness - it's unpredictable

Moby Wrap Baby Carrier moss
Perfect for colic-babies! When nothing else eased her colic, our daughter calmed down immediately when wrapped close to me or her dad! We swore by it!

Wait - they dont really like anything until 10-12 weeks, my 4mo girl would scream for hours each night, we had a swing and a vibrating chair which helped but then suddenly she just got over it - she is now fascinted by lights and white noise, and we have a tomy starlight which she loves and a vtech sheep
VTech Lullaby Light-Up Lamb
- which was my 3yo neices who also loved it
wherea her twin brother isnt interested in these at all - so before you spend a ton of money personally i would wait until 10-12 weeks and go to a playgrioup which have a variety of toys so you can gaufge what your baby likes

Aromagel For Baby - Reflexology Gel For Colic And Teething A fab product that comes with its own reflexology routine, that targets the problem areas. It helps calm baby, relieves the symptoms of colic and teething. There's also Aromagel for sleep. Perfect as part of Baby's sleep routine, again this has its own reflexology routine, with really easy to follow colour photographs and simple instructions.

My baby is now 5 and a half months, and this mobile had him absolutely transfixed from about a month old: Manhattan Toy Wimmer-Ferguson Infant Stim Mobile - it might have worked sooner too, but that's when I first put it up. It's bought me literally HOURS of peace and quiet since then!

We also have a Tummy Tub which is great - much better for your back, gets baby lovely and warm all over, thus helping them nod off more quickly, and also definitely helps them with wind.

Finally, the Baby Whisperer book is very hard to beat in terms of getting your baby into good habits, including learning to relax enough to drop off, and to re-settle themselves if they wake up. My son screamed almost non-stop for his first 2 weeks at home (after a terrible birth and a week in the hospital), so - at my wit's end - I followed the Baby Whisperer's instructions to the letter. Within 2 hours I had a peacefully sleeping baby and he's never looked back!

Oh yes, and BTW, this Easidream Ewan the Dream Sheep is also absolutely invaluable!! I use this every night, after an established ritual of bath, putting on a babygro (i.e. changing his clothes for bed), last feed, etc, and now my son knows instantly that it's night time and goes straight to sleep - hooray!

A rainmaker, essential imo. We have twins (6 months) and if they cry we turn the rainmaker up and down in front of then and it stops instantly, friends have seen it in action and have sat open mouthed in shock it works so quickly. Have got one for 2 friends with newborns and they have found the same thing. A childrens nurse friend (also with twins) of mine told me about them and said they never fail and so far she has been right.

My son also had this problem. We found out he was milk intolerant and he now has a dairy free diet with no problems since. I used to give him fennel juice too which helps with wind and far more effective than infacol or gripe water. 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds in 1 pint of boiling water. Leave for around 10 mins then strain the juice and dilute with the same amount of fresh boiled water. (I used quarter teaspoon to quarter pint) keeps for 24 hours in the fridge. Just give baby a couple of sips every 3-4 hours. My son still loves this now.

hi,I have 7 children, and the first 5 were difficult to settle.I discovered white noise with the last 2,total godsend.Stop crying kit is what it's called, consists of tapes and portable player,my last child slept 7 hrs at night from being days old,and was fully breast fed.Secret is get them used to it as early as you can ,before they forget the sounds of the womb, good luck!

Swaddling is great to help young babies sleep, so a swaddling blanket is a great buy. My baby was very sicky and colicky and improved a lot when I cut out dairy and eggs from my diet, but only really improved after about 6 months, presumably when her gut had matured. Also, can't recommend Sheila Kitzinger's book Understanding Your Crying Baby highly enough.

Indoor swing, I prefer wind-up or battery with a timer so that it stops after 10 mins and baby gets some attention before restarting.
