This is a timeless masterpiece by an Irish author whose work is not celebrated enough in recent times. Call My Brother Back is arguably the best piece to start with before moving on to the rest. Enchanting and well worth reading.Call My Brother Back

I so agree Roberta. I think I have a copy of everything he ever wrote. Not only are the stories moving but his prose is beautiful - succint yet evocative, and the pacing of his stories too is well crafted. His 'Lost Fields' is my absolute favourite. My own recent novel is also set in Belfast but in 1910, so a little before McLaverty is writing. Because it concerns a Harland & Wolff shipwright, and is set in the city's working class districts and shipyard, I felt it would be wrong to even attempt to emulate McLaverty's lovely prose. If you ever visit the Linen Hall Library in Belfast, mention his name and everyone will smile on you.

Good to hear your views above, your book looks interesting and I'm looking forward to reading it as I shall put it on my birthday wishlist! Actually just read CMBB again and it's quite tragic in a bittersweet way. It is also so uplifting to be reminded of the long-forgotten familiar and the deep sense of 'home' McClaverty evokes in his books, and therefore evokes in the reader'r own memories. Re- own writing, I do find it difficult not to incorporate some influences in anything I write, but I suppose as time goes on you start to find your own voice emerging (hoefuly!). Best of luck with the book too.
