Can't agree with you on Aliens, sure it's a great action movie and sequel, but when it comes down to visual style and the overall feel of the movie then Scott's epic edges it.

Agree. Really, really love Aliens but I'm more of a horror fan so the tense claustrophobia of the original edges it for me too. Both great though. Same with Godfather and it's sequel - both fantastic films but prefer the style of the first to the second even though they're both equally great

Don't agree with Die Hard. The original is by far the best - DH2 is a repeat of the original's storyline with nowhere near the same degree of humour or action, and the characters were poor in comparison. DH3 is a favourite of mine from when I was a kid, but not as good as DH1

Sequels I think are better than their originals are

The Dark Knight
Casino Royale
Empire Strikes Back

I agree that alan rickman's villian is superior to william sadler's but i just find the bad guys commupence more satisfying than the first.

The best parts of aliens are the scenes with the marines, henricksons's bishop and stan winston's creature effects. Them three things make it just as good for me.

Surprised Godfather part 2 or Toy Story 2 have yet to be mentioned
well they have now

John Morris says:

The Godfather 2 is not a sequel it's a continuation of the story (ie it was always originally written as two films) so it should be just as good as the first.

You are spot on with Toy story 2 however.

Die Hard 2. The villains I found marginally more menacing than Die Hard 1's. Also THAT twist 2/3rds of the way through is fantastic.

Jeepers Creepers 2. As eerie as the first.

In reply to an earlier post on 26 Dec 2013 23:31:47 GMT
Not seen jeepers creepers 2 and i doubt i ever will having read about the director who made the films.

Naked gun 2 1/2, the scene with the queen. priceless:)
Hot shots: part duex-loyd bridges and the sadam hussain skit makes this better than the first film.

I dont get the love for Jeepers Creepers, the first 20 mins of the first was great, but then it goes ridculous.

Does the dark Knight count? Ok it was kinda of planned via Batman Begins, but that is also a sequel of sorts to the franchise

It proves how objective films are because other than agreeing that Greengrass's Bourne is the better version I don't share your opinion on any of the other sequels.
No way is DH2 better than DH1 or T2 better than T1 IMO.

I agree with Paul that Empire Strikes Back is better than New Hope.

My list:

Friday the 13th 2
Desperado (unless you consider it a remake of El Mariachi)
Mad Max 2
Dawn of the Dead
The Good the Bad and the Ugly
Infernal Affairs 2
Election 2: Triad Election
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (my favorite of Indie's films)
Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx
Before Sunset

Think I prefer Night Of The Living Dead to Dawn, but I love them both to bits. Really liked Day as well

Temple probably my favourite Indy film too. Can't understand the bad press it always gets - it's really dark, a great thriller with memorable characters and has the best action sequences of the trilogy imo

On a Marvel line, Spiderman 2, X-men 2 and the second Incredible Hulk were all significantly better than the originals for me.

Whilst I'm not a big fan of the Transformers movies the third one had substantially better shot action pieces which puts it well above the first two.

On the 80s side, the original Die Hard is still the best by a long way for me but I enjoyed Aliens and T2 as much as the originals.

gille liath says:
Alien is by far the best of that series. Aliens is good but comparatively formulaic and simple-minded.

Godfather 2 is good but rests completely on the first film - it doesn't stand on its own.

Empire Strikes Back starts well but the second half is tedious. Overall it's not as good as Star Wars. How could it be when it was always intended as a middle segment? Unfortunately Return of the Jedi was inferior again.

Omen 2 - that has to be a joke.

In fact the only ones I agree with GBU and Dawn of the Dead. 99% of the time the first film is the best.

Not with the Bonds though.

The Godfather part 2
The Empire strikes back
Spiderman 2
Thor 2
Hot Shots Part Deux
A fistful of dollars then again TGTBATU
Toy Story 3
Mad Max 2
Death Wish 3
X Men 2

But thats just my persoanl opinion of course

P.S with regards to Temple of Doom, I disagree, for me Raiders is one fo the best mobies ever made, I dont think they will ever replicate its impact.

Temple had Willy scott, no where near as good as MArion Ravenwood, Temple had no Sallah, no Brody. It Had Shorty which whilst ok, made it more kiddy light but perhaps that was needed with the black magic angle.

The Macguffin, well no macguffin ever will compare to the Ark of the Covenant IMO. Peoplealso say Temple was darker...really, Nazi's attempting to acquire the most powerful artifact on Earth (the way its shown on film, not real life) in order to take over the whole world.

Also for me the Truck chase in Raiders is better than any action scene in Temple. I love them both don't get me wrong, just stating my own reasons why its not better for me, not trying to say my opinion has any more value than anyone elses. But TBH I rate Temple and Crusade on an equal footing and Raiders above both, but thats just my opinion.
