B. Cherry says:
hey there what do you think is the most over rated film of all time

mine has to be the day after tomorrow

feel free to get mad

The Day After Tomorrow was crap

For me, recently : Terminator Salvation, Indy 4 & Righteous Kill

In general, I honestly find Star Wars overrated. Also, The Godfather Part 2 (De Niro's sections bore me), ET and Poltergeist

STAR WARS was a brilliant trilogoy, but you are right. If Lucas had of rememberd that his targat audience had grown older wanting actors to finish the story and not "The blue screen of special effects & JA JA BINKS" to attract new "FANS" it would be an unparralled epic. However, i believe merchandising was the sole incentive". TUT TUT

The Matrix is pretty overated too.

No Country For Old Men - there was nothing "epic" about it, just long and boring

D. Climo says:
Superman Returns. Definately. Crap chemistry between Superman and Lois. Not enough action and far too long.
Pirates of the Carribean. Every one of them. The stories got more and more cobblers and again far too long. (Oh how I 'can't wait' for number 4 in 2011.......)

Inception.

Blade Runner - just didn't enjoy it. Also Avatar

Inception is a definite case of Emperor's New Clothes, but it has quite a few redeeming features, especially in the first 45 minutes (of a rather long film).

To attack a couple of sacred cows, I'm going to go for:

- The Shawshank Redemption (read the book instead - most likely Stephen King's best character-driven work. For Frank Darabont and King, The Mist is much better)

and

-The Usual Suspects (enjoyable, but the final twist quite possibly renders everything that came before it completely redundant).

Forrest Gump - boring drivel
Pirates of The Carrbean - boring, repetitive drivel
Amelie - boring french drivel
Fargo - boring drivel
Toy Story 3 - nowhere near as good as 1 or 2.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - in the IMDB top 250 films list - but again boring, dull and totally uninspiring

Its all subjective of course, but picking up on a couple of those, I dont think the Day After Tomorrow was ever very highly rated as far as I remember. By anybody. Indy 4 I think completely split audiences, the critics panned it and I presonally thought it was a steaming turd. Definitely agree with Pirates of the Caribbean; took me a few goes before I got through it without falling asleep!

Shawshank I disagree: I dont remember enjoying the book that much, although its a long time since I read it. Loved the film. Usual Suspects I came to quite late, so I was expecting the twist unfortunately. Also disagree on Bladerunner.

Ones I would add: Slumdog Millionaire - it was ridiculous how much press this movie got, and absolutely everyone was telling me to watch it. I finally got round to watch it on the DVD release, I went in with stupidly high expectations and was bitterly dissapointed. Maybe Im dead inside, but I felt nothing for the characters for some reason...

And at risk from getting lynched by the fanboys, I would say Dark Knight is waaaaaay over rated. I love Batman as a super hero, read a fair few of the major graphic novels, and Batman Begins is probably up there as one of my favourite superhero movies. Dark Knight was good, but there were too many things that I didnt like or irked me - could go into it but I would write an essay. Cant believe its still near the top of the IMDB top 250...

Trigger says:
Amelie's a good one actually; I thought it was a sweet and perfectly pleasant film that didn't stand out in any way.

I HATED Irreversible, but I believe it's quite an acclaimed film. I thought there was nothing good about it; it exists only to shock and be unpleasant. I've never felt so sick or tarnished after a film; I wish I could un-watch it.

I also only came to The Usual Suspects quite late (about 2 years ago) and a friend has spoiled it for me years ago, so watching it became a bit pointless when the final twist is at the forefront of your mind before it even happens.

I hated the new Star Wars trilogy, Indy 4, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3 and the Matrix sequels. I really like Pirates of the Caribbean 1 though; I think it's a great old-fashoined adventure.

I agree with Blade Runner, bored me!

I agree Matrix .. the most overated film ever, the story is just a rehash of lots of other much better Sci Fi Movies!

Posted on 8 Oct 2010 17:53:32 BDT
No country for old men, there will be blood, gangs of new York, taxi driver, Coen brothers The Ladykillers, the terminal, the interpreter and titanic.

With regards to the original star wars trilogy Return of the Jedi was a taster of what was to come which always makes me smile when folk talk about Lucas pis£ing on the original core fanbasexwith the new films ROTJ just showed what happens when Lucas started getting freedom. Kenobi, Jinn and Maul still the best lightsaber fight ever.

Titanic with that DiCaprio fellow in it. Worst version of the film ever made.

Avatouir says:
I disagree Have you seen the 53 version (also called Titanic) with a young Robert Wagner Diabolically rubbish. Though I woukld say the only decent (and non corny) Titanic film has to be A night to Remember (1958) Great acting and effect given the films age.

Most overated film of all time is surely Independance day. Every crappy 50's B movie with a couple of expensive fx thrown in. I made a point of NOT seeing it in the cinema or renting it EVER!

McG1967 says:
The worst film I've just watched is The Road, well half of it anywhere. I had to knock it off half way through as it was boring and I couldn't make head no tail of the story-line, only that it's set in a post apocalypse America.

I've heard it's based on a critically acclaimed book, so god knows what that's like.

Posted on 9 Oct 2010 17:15:53 BDT
J.Parr, my mate hated the the book till he saw the film. Said the book was still crap and it almost felt like the guy who wrote it had learning difficulties but the film made the book almost enjoyable.

Cormac McCarthy wrote The Road, and No Country For Old Men too. Both excellent books, love the Coens' No Country, but wasnt a big fan of The Road film. Viggo Mortensen is like Keanu Reeves - I don't understand why anybody that bad at acting and that uncharismatic gets given big roles

And I loved Independence Day. It was supposed to be like a B movie, and I really enjoyed it. Randy Quaid FTW!!

Guess I liked the old 50's B movies too much to want to listen to stupid lines like "that's what I call a close encounter" yawn.

Paul Tapner says:
The thing from another world. Howard Hawks made monster movie from the 1950s remade by John Carpenter as the thing. The original is allegedly a classic monster movie but instead just features a man in a monster suit creating havoc before being killed. And getting bored by incessant and very dated cold war propaganda
