Colin firth always seems to play similar characters ie aristocracy or businessman mostly so it's got me thinking about actors who have played a character out of there "comfort zone"

Some i can think of:
Sandra bullock in crash, no romcom character that's for sure.
Robin williams in insomnia & one hour photo
denzel washington in training day
Jack nicholson in about smidt & the pledge
Adam sandler in punch drunk love

Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine
Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight
Patrick Swayze in Donnie Darko
Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad
Henry Fonda in Once Upon A Time In The West

Weirdly, seems some of the best performances ever come from actors who are cast against their usual comfort zone lol

Gary Oldman in anything... never seen such a diverse actor as him, I don't think he has a comfort zone to get out of. Simply a master in everything he approaches

Gary oldman prefers his "uncomfortable" zone.

Robert Mitchum in Cape Fear 1962, A Killer In The Family (TV movie) and Night of the Hunter. Brilliant and scary in all three.
Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.
Rutger Hauer in The Hitcher 1986 original.

"trouty" meg ryan goes from prim & proper rom/com films to jane campion's controversial psychosexual in the cut.

And michael douglas goes from tough cop roles with questionable methods in films like black rain and basic instinct to then suprising and maybe even shocking people with his out of the blue casting as liberace.

It could be argued that Willis was actually cast against type playing an action hero in Die Hard when he'd previously only been famous for playing a romantic (comedy) lead in Moonlighting!

How about Keanu Reeves in Devils Advocate, he cried in that (that's showing emotion, you don't get more out of a comfort zone).

I like him too really, and I loved Devils Advocate, probably more for than Pacino than the plankster, but he was still good in it !

Adam Sandler - Reign Over Me. I usually find Sandler annoying and one dimensional so was quite surprised to see this and find he could actually act.

Elijah Wood - Sin City. Up until then i'd seen him in Deep Impact, LOTR, The Faculty, etc and saw him as a bit of a geeky wimp character so to see him as this psycho was a bit of a turn up.

Michael Keaton - Batman. there was outcry when he was first unveiled but he nailed it

Charlize Theron - Monster. Up until that she had really been the 'superficial eye candy' in most of her movies

Terence Stamp - Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert. Stamp in drag and actually being very camp, enough said!

Have you seen Elijah wood in the remake of Maniac?
