@mister joe: Lowest common denominator, outrageous snobbery or just application of the definition of that phrase based on the facts of the program? You can throw around the word snobbery all you want but you sound repetitious. I don't expect you to take any advice from anybody, your tone and words suggest you have little interest in actually paying attention to anybodies point of view. But of course you are are far too involved in hearing your own words. I only comment that when your words are just diluted uncreative versions of what a teenager might write if imitating somebody else you got to wonder what's the point?

I have no horse and really don't care where you're going to get in your way, but you didn't answer my original question? Since we're talking about programs you seemed far more annoyed at the rather warped view of the sort of 'people' that you believe watch them. Seems odd when you write this "only a pretentious snob would make judgements based on someone watching soaps." in another thread. Just wanted to clarify.

Yes me and the other 100 million like Seinfeld, and your point being?

Don't believe I take any of this serious Joe, life is too short, or too long, either way my death bed won't be filled by lost forum posts.

Mister joe, you are entitled to your opinion as are we all. However, sometimes one's opinion can be rude, abusive, aggresive, or offensive to some and therefore better to keep to yourself.

Let's keep this posting polite please!

Fair enough LEP,i am in an atrocious mood.I mean i must be doing something terminally wrong,i have a very weird sense of humour i suppose.I was just originally saying embrace your inner moron. Its just so boring reading people knocking mass entertainment as if they are so above it.
Personally i find no matter how cloaked in "politeness" a comment dismissing millions of people as "lowest common dominater" far more offensive.i suppose its how its dressed.
Tetro keeps lobbing these catty insults.....which i just see as normal common character traits, yeah i may be a bit sixth form, yeah i am hypocritical...and?I would argue some sound like hot breathed supply teachers.
Lowest common denominater is the sneering snob who cannot understand that some people just fancy a non demanding comedy.fluffy,silly......i know LAWYERS that love Big Bang Theory,my older sister is a teacher she loves Two And A Half Men.
Only someone with a massive superiority complex thinks "stupid" people watch these types of things.Yet thats cool, everyone says nothing....sad.
As for Sakura,re read the posts i am being accussed of him being bullied????

I think joe you confuse my thoughts about a program and the people who watch them. I have no thoughts about the people who watch Two and a half Men, because I don't know them. Like I said on the other thread I wouldn't presume something about anybody on what they watched. But as Two and half Men is basically just sex jokes, bad mother jokes, and if a joke doesn't get a laugh throw in a horribly cloaked innuendo joke I thought that phrase nicely summed it up given its definition. If you disagree how about putting your point of view across, I'm quite willing to change my mind.
I personally don't knock something because I feel above it. I do it because there's something I don't like about it. There's plenty of things like The Newsnight Review show that I dislike. But I suppose the channels don't feel as if they're filled with them for me to feel overly vexed by them to mention.

LEP, I apologise and that's the last I'll write on it, I just wanted to clarify since much of what he wrote was aimed at me I felt I had a certain amount of right to respond. I hope I remained civil.

EDIT: Oh and Joe I checked some of your reviews. I've been a massive Beastie Boys fan since a mate lent me a copy of a Check your Head tape back in the earl 90s. Saw them live a couple of times and just class. Really sad Adam lost his fight. RIP Adam Yauch.

Yeah okay Tetrominoe, you don't like Two and half Men, but obviously mj and probably a lot of others do. Let's leave this now it's getting personally abusive, which should not be the aim of discussion posts. Mj, think before you write please!
Thanks

Your description of Numbers sounds like Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory has walked on to the set of Marillion's 'Brave' movie and said, 'no, the girl could not have died in the end because....'!

mister joe, I wasn't assuming you haven't had problems (or saying you haven't had serious problems), I was saying I have had serious problems and it is wrong for you to refer to being overweight as a character flaw. And to be clear, I'm not accusing the people who watch these shows of being stupid, I'm saying I think the shows are stupid, I mean, I've been known to laugh at farts (obviously I am not saying that farting is stupid as it is a necessary biological function, but I don't want to watch endless TV shows based around fart jokes), but that doesn't make me stupid, and I don't expect everyone to have the same taste as me. And so we're clear, I don't support censorship but I do find some things offputting enough that they will make me stop watching a show, The Mighty Boosh thing was an example I gave. And you don't know what my life has been like and you don't know anything about my mental health so don't you dare accuse me of being self-absorbed because I can't pull myself up by my own bootstraps and all that american libertarian/conservative nonsense. Your advice is just you telling me to stop having problems so you'll feel more comfortable, I have been trying to heal for years, I mean do you think I want to have my brain constantly telling me I deserve to be tortured, BECAUSE I DON'T, BUT IT WON'T STOP.

"Heres an idea, pick up the remote, change the channel."

If we all did this then this thread would have no posts. Think of the thread man!!!!
I would imagine most of us eventually turn over when a program bores/irritates us unless we have a masochistic streak (also known as a partner lol).

The Big Bang Theory & 2 & A Half Men are crap IMO

Chuck Lorre is guilty of producing one-joke shows with humour you'd think was written by a 5 year old and then overlaying it with far far too much pre-recorded laughter

Say what you will about Friends (I'm no fan and it suffers from one-joke syndrome itself) but at least the dialogue was occasionally very smart and - at worst - competent

Makes me so mad when we have 9(?) seasons of 2 & A Half Men (and counting), 10 seasons of Friends, Christ knows how many Ice Road Truckers yet they cancel Deadwood/Invasion/Kingdom Hospital etc while they're in their prime

" ...yet they cancel Deadwood/Invasion/Kingdom Hospital etc while they're in their prime"

+1

Add Firefly and Freaks and Geeks for me.

"If we all did this then this thread would have no posts. Think of the thread man!!!! " - But surely watching something good is better than enduring something you hate just so you can moan about it?
EXAMPLE - a show called 90210 came on the tv the other day, I watched 5 mins and heard "OMG I soooo totally want him ooooo" so I changed the channel and watched something less degrading to Americans - South Park. Its as easy as that you see and now I don't feel the need to start writing death threats to the cast and writers of 90210

If everyone just switched channel and there was no complaining, fairly soon every channel would be reality TV crap

In reply to an earlier post on 6 May 2012 16:33:31 BDT
And thats pretty much the way it is right?

No. Not while shows like Fringe, Alcatraz, Breaking Bad, Dexter, etc still rely on their viewers to possess an imagination

It actually disappoints me beyond belief that X Factor, Dancing On Ice, etc permeate our culture to the point where you have pre-teen kids willing to do anything for their 15 minutes of fame. X Factor singles dominate the charts, the printed press, websites.. everything. You get reality TV 'stars' like Jade Goody who was made out to be this untouchable beacon of humanity by the tabloids as she was dying when in reality she was a simple-minded, racist bully

Makes you worry what the next extreme of our nu-age 'material era' is

In reply to an earlier post on 6 May 2012 16:59:11 BDT
Sheppards and sheep Paul, You and I are alike, we are sheppards and have little to worry about, we are not easily lead astray. People who jump on the reality TV bandwagon are sheep, and need guidance once every now and again. Sheep often go through fads, this is one of them. Besides, its ratings & number of viewers that determine whether a show stays or goes, not ranting on an amazon thread.

Agree with the Jade Goodey thing, but in fairness I'd rather her be rich for her TV appearances than Paris Hilton be rich, cus her dad was.

Um, I do change the channel, in fact I haven't been recieving TV broadcasts on my own TV for years (by my own choice), I just buy things on DVD/Blu-ray or watch them streaming online. Where I lived before I moved, there was a communal TV with a paid license fee so I'd watch stuff I liked on it, the only reason I've even seen any of the shows I'm complaining about here is because the other residents would sometimes watch them and it's nice to have company so I'd sometimes put up with the rubbish TV for that. Plus sometimes the staff (it was supported accommodation) were in there to spend time with other residents or on their breaks, so more exposure to rubbish TV that I would not have chosen to watch myself. I'm actually very much the type who doesn't want to watch things I don't like to complain about them, I'd rather watch a show I like. I am rubbish at walking away from internet forum discussions though (as you may have noticed).

Does anybody watch Game of Thrones? And if so what do you think of it?

I've heard good things about it and I'm getting the first season on Bluray for my birthday in a few weeks. Just need to get season 3&4 of Breaking Bad done before I get it.

Posted on 6 May 2012 19:35:38 BDT
It's good, mate. Got season 1 on BD on release after struggling to get into the books - it's relatively accessible, brilliantly cast and has HBO's amazing production values. Excellent start to episode 1 too

Posted on 6 May 2012 19:51:02 BDT
Yeah, Game of Thrones is very good. Though I haven't seen any of the recent series as like Sakura I watch much on dvd/internet as I like to binge on them rather than wait for a week to see the next episode (call me impatient). Love Breaking Bad too, looking forward to watching the final season with sadness. I hope HBO allow Vince Gilligan to do something new. He's a very talented writer.

I do that too, my TV is on pretty much all the time, but I'm rarely watching "live" TV. Like you, I prefer to buy/rent a DVD and watch that.

"....obviously mj likes two and a half men".
No not at all i don't like Two.5,Big Bang,How I Met Your Auntie.....not my bag at all.In fact Charlie Sheens shirt short combo repulsed me.But i sure as heck don't begrudge anyone enjoying mindless fluff.Lifes a tough bag of nuts at times work,stress,kids.....30 minutes of escapist brainrot is perfectly acceptable.
My little girl watches Noddy and Peppa the pig, quite partial to a bit of those.
Right now i am watching Streethawk, its about a motorbike with a gun on it.
Someone made a reference to Dexter, now me and my other half have all the boxsets, currently watching 5th season but PLEASE its a ridiculous programme.
You literally have to hold your breath as our favourite nice serial killer goes around killing "bad people".Makes me laugh how he is quite clearly a schizophrenic!Dexter spends half his time talking to his dead dad who pops up eating a sandwich, sitting at a bar.
Its enjoyable, pulpy compulsive viewing but lets not be under any illusions.....its silly.
Ultimately i have to concede i am not the ideal poster on this forum, you could say i am slighty misanthropic.

Dexter:What is it with Debra's constant swearing?I am no shrinking violet but that girl needs her mouth washed out with soap.I hate when swearing gets reduced of its vulgar power, she just says f this,f that without need.
