Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) was attached the direct, but walked away from the project a few months ago. I believe Jackson was always going to be the Producer, although wouldn't be surprised if he himself stepped into the directorial role if there's no-one else to do it.

I love the book, but am not really that interested in the film. One of the best bits about the book is that it's short and concise, whereas you know both parts of the film will add up to a 5 or 6 hour monster.

I actually prefer The Hobbit overall because it doesn't have so much baggage or droning as LotR, plus it's a simpler plot of basically a bunch of dwarves (and Gandalf, for some reason?) going to steal a big pile of treasure. LotR has far too many songs in it in Elvish which go on for bloody pages, and far too much "they walked... they were hungry..." and the like.

And I still think The Hobbit would work fine as one film, but then there's less money to be made that way.

True - but it's the baggage and droning that makes LotR a classic. The Hobbit was never meant for adults.

I always preferred the Hobbit, it had a sense of humour and a solid storyline. LOTR can get a little slow in the books. Not that that's a bad thing, it just has so many threads to the story, it takes a while to tie them all up!!
