I think it's a really brave move by the BBC. At the end of Tenant's doctor I started to get a bit dismissive of Dr Who. But watching some of the repeats of Smith's reign as the doctor I admit I was very wrong. Why I think it's brave though is the last few series, probably going back to Eccleston, there's been that relationship bordering on romantic between the Doctor and his assistant. But also they're good looking young guys which probably fits nicely with Dr Who's main demographic. And now with Capaldi that's pretty much taken out of the equation and taking it back to more of an old school kind of Doctor. I'd love to see him play it like Malcolm Tucker from the Thick of It, but that's probably unlikely.
I have a fondness for Peter Davidson, largely because that's the first doctor I watched as a kid. But I have to admit also liking McCoy though that might have something to do with Ace. McCoy has a couple of my favourite episodes though, "Ghost Light" and also "The Curse of Fenric".
