Lucasfilm sold to Disney, New Star Wars films announced episodes 7-9, WTF?

Shocking news to wake up to anybody looked it up, what's your thoughts?

Lucas has sold it all for just over 4Billion dollars.

He will still be a creative consultant, Kathleen Kennedy will be President of that branch, but all will report in to Disney head honchos.

This gives them everything, the full star Wars franchise rights, including Movies, Merchandising, TV, Books and games. Also ILM now belongs to Disney.

They ahve already as you'd imagined announced plans to cash in and start making some money back off this.

Already stated that Episodes 7-9 specificaly mentioning sequels to Return of The Jedi are to be pushed ahead with episode 7 possibly getting as early as a 2015 release date.

They will also look to push ahead with the TV series as well.

I can honestly say I am shocked, I never thought Lucas would sell his company or the rights to star Wars instead passing them to his kids.

They have already said that the one big change will be no Fox fanfair at the start of the Movies for obvious reasons.

I dont know, this could either be what takes Star Wars to a new level or it could cheapen and cash in on the series even more than the prequels did?

Perhaps the biggest film news of the decade?

God help us all. Why does Lucas need the money ? Is he bored with it all ?

A massive, massive shock. Who would have thought that Lucas would ever sell away the rights to both the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises?
At the moment I'm not entirely sure how I feel about Disney taking over the Star Wars saga. Only time will tell if they treat it with respect, or completely destroy it. Hopefully they will have the good sense not to make them too 'kiddie friendly'.
On a positive note, at least Anthony Daniels (C3PO) is going to be busy again.

They reckon they'll pump out a new film every 3 years for the forseeable future.

And they have no script yet for a film thats due in 2015.

On the bright side it can't really get a lot worse than the prequel trilogy, so the only way is up, right?! I mean, I think if they actively tried to get worse acting they still couldn't beat Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen's stellar performances.

I don't think they should make it Episode VII though, unless they're doing the Grand Admiral Thrawn trilogy - but then chronologically that was only five years after Jedi, so how would they factor in Hamill, Fisher and Ford? Similarly, they could set it 30 years after the originals to account for their ages, and maybe follow their children (someone suggested on the other topic having Luke as the head of a new Jedi Order, which I think is quite a cool idea), but then if you're going to make 'sequels' which are only loosely related then it's barely worth making them actual sequels at all. The thing is, the universe is very broad and rich and I think they could make a good new series of films without the need to give it a Roman numeral so avoid it being an actual numbered chronological sequel (i.e. just call it Star Wars: Echoes of a Black Sun, or something, rather than Star Wars Episode VII: Echoes of a Black Sun). Basically, just do what Knights of the Old Republic did; still being familiar with all the elements we know and love, but with a completely new cast and a good, original plot. In fact, I think the KotOR plot would work really well over a film or three. Malak was an excellent villain and Bastila the impressionable young Jedi.

I dont think they'll keep the canon of the books.

I thgink they'll just start with a new story for ep vII which totally ignores 80% of the EU.

Personally thats a plus for me, because I dont like the EU books.

But thats just a personal opinion.

While I think the plot of KotOR would work well I doubt we'd see it, because it's already an established story it would limit their creative freedom in writing the script (plus wouldn't Disney have to pay royalties to whoever wrote it?). What I'd quite like to see is something looking at the Infinite Empire (exsited before the Republic) but because humans would have very little roles in that again I doubt we'd get it. Or, what really seems to be crying out for some attention in the SW universe, a trilogy based around the Jedi civil war when the Sith first seperated from the Jedi order.

Or just go 100 years in the Future, you could have descendants of Skywalker, Solo name, but no immediate connection.

Either way the Sith have to come back, and this is my only issue, if the Sith return will that not totally defeat the whole point of Anakins life.

I hope to heck they modify the Jedi order in regards to the changes Luke Brings i.e. not being afraid of attachments etc and dealing with emotions properly.

I think it's cool, they can't do any worse than Lucas, and if they do no better then <shrug>

No better just cheapens the original classic movies even more, yeah the PT was generally pish, but the OT is still phenomenal.

Even though we might not get OT standards if its well above PT still, then id be I suppose happier.

If Lucas is still on board then maybe we will the the next 3 will be part of the "Original 9" that Lucas first intended in the first place,he said that only the lack of "film" tecnology stopped him making all 9... you will have to go back in th mists of time to check out what Lucas intended to do {before he even made "A new Hope".. IV}

Well at least we will get the whole 9 stories. I had the book The Art of Star Wars back in the 70's and it did say it was one of nine (no Borg jokes please) scripts. Always wondered if we would ever see all of them being made.

I don't believe that it was Lucas' initial intention to make Star Wars the fourth instalment and have it part of a nine episode saga. No matter how you spin it, beginning a series a third of the way through just makes no sense. Is there really much visually in The Phantom Menace which couldn't have been achieved using the same tech as was used to make the original trilogy? Aside from the Pod Race - which I thought was bloody terrible anyway - and perhaps the final battle with all the droids, there's not much which is radically different to the original films, just obviously adjusted relative to the technology of the time.

I reckon Lucas realised what a money spinner it was and what a good backstory he'd created with Vader and the Empire, and decided that prequels telling of their rise would be a good idea. And then, I'd be interested to see what his original intent was with Episodes VII-IX, because Jedi finished so neatly that there's not really an obvious need or opportunity for a sequel.

Well it was always misreported, you can find many quotes from him saying there would be no eps 7-9 and that it was always the story of anakin which si finsihed and the Sith destroyed after the 6 movies.

Literally he said this many times during the prequel production, but the guys changes his mind more than his pants. He does not care he's sitting with 4 billion in his bank account

Well the story goes that he couldn't get anywhere to sign up to a 9, 6 or even 3 film deal so he chose episode 4 to start with because it's the only one that can exist as a stand alone film.

I wonder if it will coontinue from the novels or will it change canon. If they keep the orignal cast it could work as the last novel takes place around 40 years after the original films which is not much older than the cast have aged. The problem might be if poeple who have not read the novels will get it.
Luke Skywalker as married (is wife as died- Mara Jade who was the emperos hand) Thay have had a child and named him Ben and he is now a Jedi Knight, Han and Lea get married and have 3 kids Jaican Jaina(who are twins) and a third child called Anakin. Two of the solo children die Anikin And Jaican who becomes a sith. Also Chewy as died along with General Ackbar.
I think they will forget about books and start agian with a fresh cast or maybe set it 100 or so years after.

I loved the original trilogy growing up but the prequals have left me jaded. I guess I've moved on. So have movies. Who wants to watch yet another lightsaber duel when you can have a new superhero with a new superpower? Sorry, but I fear SW films are a spent Force (sorry). No matter how good a job Mickey makes of Episode 7, don't expect anything with the depth of Empire. Summer movies aren't crafted that way anymore.

And yet, ironically, most if not all of the superheroes in their respective movies which are being released at the moment have been around much longer than Star Wars has.

I agree in part but there as been some great novels as well Drew Karpyshyns Darth Bane trilogy set 1000 years BBY ere great reads and could be made into films. Only thing is they are for adults(or young adulys) only I could not see Disney going down that path at all. Shame they could go for more adult entertainment the way the new Batman and the new bond films have.

Luke's gone from being a rebel fighter pilot to head of a major religous order. Leia's gone from rebel ambasador to major player in galactic politics, Han and Chewy have gone from minor criminals to major political influences etc. All this makes them major targets for the various bad guys, if basically nothing changed despite all this would be far more "hack writing" than actually building in significant changes to the characters and world.

Trigger- but few have appeared in their own big-budget movies due to lack of tech and confidence.

Cam Clark- ROTS made about 3.5 mill at the b.o., Avengers four times as much. Even the movie Thor -considered by many as a bigger risk than the first Ironman- made 100 mil more than ROTS. But i agree, Merchandising has always made Lucas more than the movies themselves.

I still think episode VII will be a mistake, a glorified fanfic at worst, a wildly expensive curiousity at best. Most will want Luke, Han and Leia back in some capacity and it'll be sure to disappoint, a bit like the previous Indy.

Yeah, I know, I probably don't seem like much of a fan, but I was born in 1971 and grew up with the original trilogy, read the comics and chewed the gum. But can anyone with their hand on heart think these movies are a good idea after the woeful sequals? All right, Lucas won't be directing or writing, but no matter who takes over the helm I'd be worried about the overall 'UnLucasness' of the final product.
