A. Marshall says:
I know nothing about this genre so which graphic novel would those in the know recommend as a first novel for a very bright 14 year old? Many thanks.

T. Hope says:
probably not watchmen !!
it would depend what side you want to look at, DC or Marvel,
DC, i would recommend the batman stories by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale,

Batman: Long Halloween

or, Alex Ross's Justice volumes 1,2 and 3

Justice: v. 1

hope this helps !

Dan Bunn says:
Transmetropolitan - All the way. I think if your just starting at 14 it might be a bit late for DC (with exceptions) i'd go for Vertigo (Grown up brother of DC). You can't really go wrong so many awesome series.

PS: If you really are a very bright 14 year old then Watchmen is worth a read. It is a little hard going for first timers but will challenge your perceptions of the graphic novel. Is a little dated now though. I'd still say transmetropolitan.

If the 14YO in question is insensitive when it comes to Violence and Sleaze , I suggest Wanted....but it really is rough ride , so ye be warned

otherwise check out Marvel and DC....possibly the Punisher?

I know a bright 14YO and I still would wait another two years before giving him Watchmen.

If you want something gritty and thought invoking but not that sexy, try V for Vendetta.

I also agree with Mr T Hope, you cant really go wrong with Batman

For a complete novice I'd say try them on something they'll recognise, so yes Batman (Year One, Killing Joke, A Lonely Place of Dying), but I first read Claremont's Wolverine in my midteens, and loved it. I recently re-read it and it still rocks. Check it out.
