Excellent House Mix, 6 Mar 2007
I was pleased to see Ralph Lawson had mixed this months Fabric CD because he is resident at my favourite club, Basics in Leeds. The mix works really well because it's a good one to listen to on the ipod or in the car but I can also imagine it going down really well on the dancefloor. It's difficult to get that balance between a tightly controlled listening experience and also a set that would pack the floor. One of my other favourite mixes, James Holden: At the Controls, is an exceptional sonic journey to listen to but I can't imagine dancing to it.
Ralph sticks to straight up house with driving, druggy grooves, similar to the Basics main room at 4am on a sunday morning. Most of the tracks are instrumentals or dubs so there are no vocals or massive breakdowns to distract you from the flow. This is why minimal mixes can get quite boring but Ralphs mix is very effective because the tracks have just the right amount of bassy funk to get the feet tapping. I'll be listening to this one for months to come I reckon.

Not as great as it should be, 27 April 2007
Fabric 33 sees long serving stalwart of house, Ralph Lawson step up to the decks. Lawson has been a champion of a solid house sound, not jumping onto band-wagons, but also not getting stuck in a musical rut. In Fabric 33 he has succeeded in creating a mix that is unlikely to date, and takes in some good solid house music. However, this mix lacks a little something. Its not cheesy, it's not achingly hip but it's just... not that great. It's hard to criticize this mix. I like Lawson and especially his 20:20 vision imprint, but this mix lacks a little fizz! There is nothing wrong with the music or mixing on offer, tracks like Will Saul's "Pause" and Phonique's rub of "Anymore" see to that, but that the mix doesn't really go anywhere. Imagine stepping into a room at Fabric with Lawson behind the decks. He's been on a little while and is due on a little longer, and you decide to stay for 70mins or so of the middle of his set, and then leave before the end. Well that's what you get here. Good music, deep and solid, but missing the grand finale. A perfect CD to put on to wind down or when you need something that's not too much for the ears to take in.
To be honest this is a pure 2.5 stars CD, but due to the fact that its not a bad mix or full of bad music, and Lawson is a hero on the house scene, its gonna get 3 stars.

Excellent, 12 April 2007
Wonderfully well thoughtout and put together set by Mr. Lawson. Slower, deep grooves and melodies permutate the whole album making this probably the best Fabric CD since Mikey Myers Fabric 13 stepped up to the turntables, and don't get me wrong there have been some good Fabric CDs since then. Its not middle of the night high pace house, but nor is it chill out, simply something in the middle. Early evening or sunday night stuff perhaps.
