At first glance this looks like an Age of Empires clone - peasants gather the resources to build the buildings to produce the soldiers to fight the enemy. What gives Stronghold it's edge is the castle building and siege warfare. Once you get past the wooden palisade phase you can build quite impressive castles only for the computer to throw wave after wave of attacks at you.
The military campaign despite it's feeble plotline is more fun than the economic "games" and there are a small selection of historical castles to recreate famous sieges but these are not nearly as satisfying as starting from scratch. The controls are a bit confusing at first and the interface is very PC like but once you get into it it's fine. Also it's very noisy so battles sound quite exciting but the idle chitchat of the characters does grate on your nerves after a while. I'm not sure if it's one I'll go back to after I finish the military campaign but its enough to keep me challenged for a month or two.

This is one of the first games I bought for our sparkly new Mac and as a fan of castles and all things medieval it seemed a good idea to try it out, despite not being a big lover of SimCity type games.

So far I'm impressed although I had expected more graphically. The gameplay is great, and the castle structures and the economy of your fortress is well thought out, although your popularity often seems like it's resting on a knife-edge. One major gripe is the time you're given to raise an army before being attacked - I didn't have nearly enough time to get myself going on some of the early missions, and found myself being demolished by the opposition. However, it's not impossible and I think just requires some thought on resource allocation.

However, all in all, a good game which will hold my interest for a good while to come.
