LeapFrog Discovery Ball

LeapFrog Discovery Ball

Product Description

Amazon.com Review

The Discovery Ball for babies of six months and upward is another innovative and invaluable learning toy from LeapFrog. As well as being great fun in itself, the ball is designed to familiarise babies with the alphabet at an early age, helping them begin to learn the letters and their sounds almost unconsciously, as they push on parts of the ball and hear it say a letter of the alphabet or sing a song related to that letter. Mounted on a solid stand which it can be spun on or detached from, theDiscovery Ball has squishy sides and a ribbon of buttons round the middle with letters of the alphabet to press. The ball has three fun interactive modes, letter, phonics and music. In the Letters mode, babies can press a letter to find out its name in upper case (A, B, C through to Z). In the Phonics mode, they can press the letters to hear its lower case primary phonics sound, (ah, buh, cuh). In both of these modes, when the Discovery Ball is moved it sings the ABC song and when the motion stops, so does the song, encouraging babies to keep it mobile. In the Music Mode, each of the 26 letters of the alphabet starts a different instrumental tune, from g for "Greensleeves" to r for "Row, row, row your boat" and there are so many to choose from that your baby will never get tired of pushing the buttons and hearing another tune. The volume control is a handy feature, with the "low" button, making all the speech and songs a little quieter, although still plenty loud enough for a child's enjoyment. Helpfully, the ball automatically switches off after 15 minutes of inactivity. This is a great fun toy with lots of learning potential. Age six months and over. Requires three AA batteries (batteries included for demonstration purposes only). --Rachel Ediss

Manufacturer's Description

This solid plastic ball has the letters of the alphabet around it and can either sit in a base and be twirled around, or removed from the base and rolled around. When switched on, there are three different modes to choose from--press a letter when in Letters mode and you will hear the letter's name; in Phonics mode you will hear the phonics sound; in Music mode you will hear one of 26 tunes. Roll the ball around in any of the different modes and you will hear music--either the ABC song or one of three tunes.

This toy is marketed for six months and older, but what is great is that it seemed to entertain both my one year old and three year old. The little one loved rolling the ball around and listening to the tune it played, particularly when it was out of the base and he had to crawl after it, as well as pressing the letters to see what happened. My 3 year old seems to have got as much enjoyment out of it, at a stage when she is just beginning to learn her letters, and the fact that it plays 26 tunes means we have had great fun trying to remember which letters play her favourite tunes. --Elizabeth Currie

The LeapFrog Discovery Ball is a red and blue ball supported on a white frame and spindle. It spins on the spindle or can be removed (by an adult). It has a white centre panel with the alphabet raised in various colours. It has 2 controls on the panel, one for the mode, alphabet, phonic or music, and one for the volume, off, low or on. The manufacturer's age range is from six months upwards.

This was tested by a group of four children, aged 7, 10, 12 and 20 months. The ball kept all of them amused and was enjoyed by all the children. The ball is easy to handle, and in all modes the slightest touch is rewarded with a song. The music mode was the most appropriate for younger children, each letter pressed plays a different tune. The ABC mode says the letter name, the phonics mode says the sound. This is a good teaching aid for slightly older children, meaning that this toy will be used for years not just months.

Young babies and infants will enjoy the 26 different tunes in the music mode, all of which are recognisable popular tunes or nursery rhymes. There are also flashing red lights, which the children also enjoyed. Taken off the spindle the babies in particular loved chasing the ball across the floor.

From a practical point of view, the ball is easy to clean, and the battery compartment is well hidden. It is simple for an adult to get into (no screwdriver required, just a coin), but impossible for a child to get into. On the base the ball is sturdy and difficult for a child to tip over. It is easy to remove and replace on the spindle, but too fiddly for a child to do on their own, so making it safe. The two volume settings are an unusual, but welcome feature on an electronic toy.

This is a well-made toy with lots of features and would make an excellent present for a baby's first birthday. --Sally Hunt

For once an electronic toy that doesn't irritate. My 21 month old enjoys making music by spinning the ball around, and by pressing the individual letters of the alphabet. There are 26 different tunes each corresponding in some way to the letter i.e., P = Pop the Weasel, R = Row the Boat. As with all good educational toys, my son is just enjoying the Discovery Ball, unaware of the links between letter and letter sounds, but I'm sure this is laying the foundation for learning.

As a parent, I was also pleased that there is an option to hear the letter phonically which I understand is the best way for my son to learn letters as he grows older. Then only niggle I have is the Americanisation of the letter "Z" (Zee) in the ABC song, when it is pronounced "Zed" elsewhere.

Overall an excellent and simple educational toy which I believe is beneficial from approximately six months right up to letter learning age and beyond. --Judith Catton

5.0 out of 5 stars Much more than I expected!, 13 April 2003

From the description I actually thought this sounded too good to be true - but its not! Exceptionally well built. Its range of value is also quite incredible. The only minor criticisms I'd have would be the american voice - but it really only comes to be noticeable on the 'Z' (zeeeeee!). But don't let that put you off. Trust me...it kept me busy for a while too - and I'm 34....oh, and the baby likes it too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for an electronic toy, 14 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
My baby of 14 months has inherited and been given quite a few electronic toys, and most of them are dull beyond belief. They don't hold his attention for more than a couple of minutes because they (paradoxically) do too much, and there isn't any room for him and his imagination. On his first birthday, surrounded by garish, noisy electronic toys, he couldn't stop playing with..... a paper plate. The Discovery Ball has all the characteristics of these awful toys - flashing lights, tinny music, american voices - but it still continues to interest him. He got it at about 8 months old, and, six months later, still will sit happily whirling it around for quite a while. I would recommend it (but don't bother with Learning Friend Tad), and would suggest you keep it on the music mode. Also, when your baby is done with it during a play session, turn it off: it has a rather cheeky bit of programming whereby it makes a "look at me" sound when it hasn't been played with for a few minutes, which distracts the baby from whatever he has moved on to, to bring him back to the ball.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good toy for keeping them entertained, 21 Feb 2002

Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
My baby enjoys spinning this ball on its stand, keeping the music
playing and when she hits a letter and it
speaks to her she's delighted. I can see that when she's a little older
she'll follow it everywhere and it will
encourage her to crawl as well as being teaching ABCs without any
"heavy" learning being involved.
