Product Description

AMAZON.CO.UK

Without question the most successful English player of the modern era, Nick Faldo has won just about everything in golf – except the press and public affection being dished out to less worthy men. You don’t need to read deep between the lines of "Life Swings" his new autobiography to understand that Faldo recognises how far his success has been shadowed by an often rocky relationship with the media. "Putting the record straight" would have been a good alternative pun for the title of this book. The trouble with being a hugely focused sportsman like Faldo, who finds the press intrusive, distracting, malicious and moronic, is that your occasional guileless attempts to address the situation are pretty much doomed to failure. Again and again, looking back on decades at and around the top of his sport, Faldo recalls how he has been misreported, misrepresented and misunderstood. To his credit, there is more bemusement than bitterness in this alternative commentary on his career, and he admits culpability once or twice too. All told the duality - what the public saw, and what Faldo saw - offers a unique perspective on some of golf’s biggest moments. There are plenty of jokes too, and stories from 'inside the ropes' concerning the great and small of the professional game, told in an easy going style. It would not be stretching it too far to say that Faldo comes across as something of a natural wit, and even if some of his tales have the well-worn quality characteristic of someone who has doggedly approached the chore of regular public speaking, there are enough genuine chuckles to make this a hugely pleasurable read. --Alex Hankin

5.0 out of 5 stars forgotten legend?, 17 Oct 2004
Nick faldo has always been misunderstood in the eyes of many people. This book was a fascinating insight into the life of Europes greatest ever golfer. It seems to me that in the main faldo has not been that popular with the press is that he is a totall WINNER...the british tabloids prefer losers{beckham, gazza, eddie the eagle e.t.c].I really enjoyed this book .Easily the best sports bio i have read for years..

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, 6 Jan 2004
I may be slightly biased in this review as Faldo is one of my two great golfing heroes. Having previously read the biography on Faldo it is refreshing to hear his side of the story.
This book gives a real insight into the world that is Faldo, he shares his thoughts on the game in a way never before heard, and all I can really say about this book is that it opens ones eyes to a side of Nick that can sometims be forgotten by the media.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good insight into what makes Nick Faldo tick!, 17 Jun 2005
By A K Edge (Isle of Man, UK United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
You may not like Nick any better after you have read this book but you will understand him better and also understand that he has been through the same traumas in life as the rest of us. This book is honest and open and I had sympathy for the issues that he had to deal with. His parents total support for him from even before he took up Golf is highlighted. What it takes to be great - total commitment - it's all there

3.0 out of 5 stars OK
Considering what Nick Faldo has done in his golfing career, could have been better.

But well worth a read anyway
