5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for alumni of the University of London, 29 Sep 1999
By A Customer
The University of London was the first University in England to break the Oxford and Cambridge hegemony. For more than 160 years the University has maintained a proud tradition of educating full-time and part-time students. Whether participating in residential or distance learning successful students at the University at entitled to wear one of the distinctive robes of a graduate.

This superbly written and illustrated book gives details of diplomas, certificates, bachelors, masters and doctoral robes of the University. Written by a London alumnus and a professional robemaker, the book is the final word on the history, development and current state of the University of London's academic dress.

Graduates of the University, together with those with an historical or costume interest will be facinated by this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Guide, superbly illustrated, 9 Sep 1999
By A Customer
This slim volume belies a wealth of scholarship and is an excellent introduction to a fascinating subject. Admirably lucid, it traces the origins of academical dress in general, beginning with the early European universities and moving through the ages to the present day, showing clearly as it does so the survival and evolution of this ancient form of dress.

A lively history of London University Academical dress then follows; finally, there is a comprehensive section showing the dress for every degree at the university.

At every stage the book is handsomely illustrated - details of old engravings, excellent photographs and sophisticated computer-generated colour images help bring the book alive.

More wide-ranging than its title suggests, this engaging book is vastly superior to the rather scanty books which exist for other universities. No particular link with (or even interest in) the university itself is required to enjoy it, though no doubt graduates of the university will find especially relevant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellently illustrated and up-to-date, 2 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This book includes a short history of academical dress in general (with an excellent set of photographs) before going on to London's academical dress. This begins with some London historical notes and then describes - again with excellent illustrations - all gowns and hoods currently worn at London. It includes the recent changes in rules for academical dress at London.

Similar books (by various authors) exist for Oxford, Cambridge and Hertfordshire but none of these is quite as extensive. Anyone who owns one of these will want to obain a copy of Goff's book.
