4.0 out of 5 stars READ THIS IF UNSURE..., 4 Aug 2007

The general consensus on Macy Gray is that she made a brilliant first album 'On How Life Is', then two so-so offerings (of which this is the first), before coming back strongly with her latest LP 'Big'. So, if you're looking for somewhere to start try either 'On How Life Is' or 'Big'. (Personally, I would recommend the latter). However, if you've got both of those and still want more then this isn't a bad album by any means. The melodies are good, the lyrics are clever and the musicianship of her players is probably even BETTER than the first LP. The only problem for me is that she doesn't sound as if she MEANS it quite as much. At times she seems bored and at other times even cynical; there's not enough of her trade-mark emotional directness and honesty. And, as if someone's realised this, her vocals have been turned way down in the mix. Like I said though, overall a good album, but not the place to start.

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY ENJOYABLE, 18 Jul 2006

A few years ago I bought this album on tape and only listened to the first few songs. Recently I had listened to an Erykah Badu album and was in the mood for something similar.

Macy's first album was amazing and I foolishly assumed this wouldn't be as good. I listened to this album and got quite a shock as I expected to find only 2 or 3 songs that I'd enjoy, though all of them were enjoyable, no disappointing track, really. I've listened to it a few times since then and its got better each time.

The song "sweet baby" with Erykah badu really made me get this album and would be the best on it probably. I love the way Macy can sing like a mad woman, even if the lyrics may seem shocking, she'll still sing them passionatley. Songs like "Give me all your loving or I will kill you" and "Harry" sound quite harsh, but I love them, they're so catchy. On the tape it may be different than the CD, but on my tape it ends off with a real catchy track "shed". Just as good as the last album, perhaps even a little better. A real treat, anytime!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funking Up Your Stereo, 10 Nov 2004
Macy Gray is probably one of the most original if not THE most original she takes soul music it a next level her daring experimintation to her cool husky voice this woman can do no wrong. The I.D Macy's 2nd album may have gone platinium but most people consider it to be really poor and dry...well these are either people that havent even heard it..expecting "On How Life Is Part II"...or just people with a narrow mind.
I have to admit i didnt really like this album at first but u listened to it with an open mind and it quickly grabbed my attention

1.Relating To A Psychopath/Great way to start the album its fun fresh and just plain ol' funky its just one of them songs u cant help but tap your foot to 10/10

2.Boo/Alot of people have said this is the worst song on the album i beg to differ this is a Grrrreattt tune the chorus is cool the song as a whole is humerous 10/10

3.Sexual Revolution/This song is very experimental wen it was release it was like marmite you either loved it or hated it obviously i loved it its just so different and its all about self-confidence and just wileing out not givin a s*it and being yourself a strong message with a beat so funky u cant help but "Shake It" 10/10

4.Hey Young World (Part II) (Featuring Slick Rick)/I actually do like the Slik Ricks version as well but i think this is much better its got good positive lyrics with a kids chorus in the background chanting "Hey Young World" gives it a great sound its just a fun song Slik Ricks verse at the end is good hes voice is jus so cooool!!!! 10/10

5.Sweet Baby (Featuring Erykah Badu)/I dunno why Ms Badu is credited you can hardly hear her and u no how heavy her voice is but anyway this was also a single release its summin that could have been on "On How Life Is" it has the same vibe i really lik this song i wanted to buy the single once but couldnt find it a definate album highlight 10/10

6.Harry/Im not that keen on this song i do listen to it but its not that hot its about she dont want Harry to be her man she just wants casual sex lol its not terrible and it is very amusing but its not a favourite of mine 7/10

7.Gimme All Your Lovin' Or I Will Kill You/The humourous yet obscure title may seem strange but the song is a killa its she sings about a man she wants but cant seem to get so she threatens him "Gimme All Your Lovin'Or I Will Kill You" very cool 10/10

8.Don't Come Around (Featuring Sunshine Anderson)/I LOVE THIS SONG Co-produced by the musical marvel Raphael Saadiq (who doesnt love this man) Macy's vocals are great and Sunshine A sounds great (her album "Your Woman" is great) this is my favourite song on the album 10*/10

9.My Nutmeg Phantasy (Featuring Angie Stone & Mos Def)/What a cool song this is another favourites of mine i love it wen Mos Def sings he has a great voice Angie's part is good as well just a great jam with the fusion of 3 fanstastic artists 10/10

10.Freak Like Me/Yeah this song caught my ear i instantly loved it the lyrics are great her vocals are just sublime also has Amir "?uestlove" Thompson frm the Roots on percussion which gives it that great vibe 10/10

11.Oblivion/As amazon says "Sounds like Umpa Loompas singing" and theyre right i find this really weird its not bad at all its also a marmite song but i dont like it much 6/10

12.Forgiveness/This is a nice laid back song with a nice percussion set and great piano loop the lyrics are well about forgiveness lol but yea a cool song 10/10

13.Blowin' Up Your Speakers/Its a different way to end the album not exactly a "track" jus more like a minute of pure instrumental the stratchin at the end could have been left off as it gets fairly loud and sounds like nails running down a chalkboard 6/10

All in all "The I.D" is a great album i think people need to give this a few listens in order to get the jest of what Macy is tryna do

Top 5 The I.D Tunes
1.Don't Come Around
2.Hey Young World (Part II)
3.Sweet Baby
4.Sexual Revolution
5.Boo

If you are a macy fan you'll love this, and if your not you'll probably love it too.Because it has such a variety of styles within it although a few of the tracks may not appeal to you (she has worked with other artists in some tracks, I find these tracks less good)but some macy gray classics make it worth your while.

It starts off with a cracker, 'relating to a psychopath', also the subtly funny 'gimme all your lovin or I will kill you' in Macy's true style. Then three wonderful tracks. You will be so impressed by her powerful and husky voice that fits well to any of her inspiring lyrics.

I reccomend you buy this album, as soon as you can !

2.0 out of 5 stars I hate to say it, but a bit of a disappointment!, 12 Mar 2002

I bought Macy Gray's album 'The ID' on the strength of 'On How Life Is' only to be really disappointed. The songs on her debut album seemed to lend themselves more to her amazing voice - a real shame.

3.0 out of 5 stars As much as I hate to admit it I'm disappointed, 1 Oct 2001
As much as I didn't want to compare this to On How Life Is, it being one of my favourite albums, I couldn't help it.
On her debut, Macy had a much simpler sound and it suited her voice much more than this album does. From the first track it is evident that this album is really in need of the fantastic production of Andy Slater who worked on the first album. It can especially be heard in the backing vocals which don't mesh with Macy's as well here.

Also, the sound is much more mainstream here. While some tracks do hark back to the sound of yore (such as Boo or Sweet Baby), others just sound clunky, such as Oblivion or Sexual Revolution...And the less said about My Nutmeg Phantasy the better

Something else which doesn't sit well with me is the guest singers. Very rarely on their respective songs is it evident that they are there. For instance, when I heard that Macy Gray's new song featured Erykah Badu I was excited because 2 of my favourite singers would be dueting. Hah! While the resulting song is nice, and Badu's backing vocals give some lovely harmonies, you've got to wonder what the point is in crediting her?

I wanted to like this album. I really did. And I suppose it's OK. But anything more than that is a push. Macy should consider going back to her roots next time

5.0 out of 5 stars Tongue in cheek...burst out laughing...while you're grooving, 21 Sep 2001

Macy Gray...the talent from the left field. The woman that show cases entertainment. From the promotional dress to the cocksure lyrics on this project (the id - as Macy says is 'the unedited you'), she has done a good deal in a short time. Though her vocal range won't shatter glasses, it will shatter silences. The funniest thing is her lyrics, reflect what one can feel from time to time and aren't able to have in a song! Lines like 'give me all your loving or I will kill you, put one through your head..and cry when you're dead' shines our duality of love/hate. Her 'sexual revolution' is the bang of the disc, and don't get too serious about her 'oblivion', it's clear that we are indeed 'relating to a psychopath'.. but this psycho is a happy go lucky lady. And as for keeping it real, you get the draw that you're in the session as she yells 'Hold Up!' at the end of a track, or 'That's enough!'

Macy my dear...I focused on your dress (as at the MTV 2001 VMAs in New York) and I bought it, and I am loving it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wierd, Wicked, Sexy and Sleazy........ Macy does it again., 18 Sep 2001

So very different from her first album, "The ID" is far more polished with a star line up from Erykah Badu to Mos Def & Slick Rick. "The ID" is also far more quirky than the first album it has solid Macy tracks like "Relating to Psychopath" thru to the wierdness of "Oblivon" and "Forgiveness", and it the wierd tracks that will probably getting you talkin' about it and constantly leaving this album on repeat. After all 200th time around "I Try" gets a bit dull but "Caligula" and "I Comitted Murder" has made me play her debut album again and again. The album shows that Macy hasn't stayed still but has rather grown, a pleasant surprise as follow up albums often are disapointingly similar or just plain worse. The instrumentation has also gone thru sweeping changes and there now seems a greater depth to the music. So far this album has grabbed my attention (considering I buy upwards of 5 albums a week this is no mean feat!) and I have already have a favorite track "Relating To A Psychopath" but I love the name of track 7 "Gimme all your lovin' or I will Kill You". My advice don't think about it..... Buy it.... You won't be disapointed.
