Irresistable blend of literary genius and obnoxious humour, 27 Feb 2001

I was laughing from cover to cover. In an "Irishman's Diary", Myers manages to root out, or sometimes conjure up, the many flaws in both Irish and world society. A man totally pained when dealing with political correctness, Myers deals with almost all trivialities associated with life in Ireland. His ability to make satire and debate out of such issues is his overriding talent. The philosophies of Myers, although sometimes totally outlandish and misappropriate, are conveyed in such a way that the reader has no choice but to admire his art form. Myers has the rare talent of combining sheer wit and keen observation; the result is a highly entertaining glance at human behaviour in all its complexity. "An Irishman's Diary" also shows off Myers interest and intelligence in areas such as music, sport and politics. Being a historian, he gives frequent strong opinions on aspects of Irish history - some controversial, some plausible, but all well constructed and researched. Kevin Myers has written a book for those who like to voice their opinions. His outspoken style may attract strong criticism from some diplomats, but love him or hate him, in agreement or disagreement, Myers has inarguably penned an extremely entertaining documentation on how he views life. He is, after all entitled to his own outrageous opinions!
