This stupendous set of live-recorded DVDs makes the following remark of Norman Lebrecht's look rather silly: "Daniel Barenboim ... must decide soon which of his talents is the one he wants the world to remember him by" (La Scena Musicale Online, Nov. 2002). The films demonstrate that at the same time as being one of the world's busiest and most accomplished conductors, Barenboim can still play the entire Beethoven sonata cycle from memory in less than three weeks - and can play it at least as well as any full-time pianist alive (and possibly better than any pianist that ever lived, except Beethoven himself). I was lucky enough to be in the Berlin audience for three of these eight recitals, and can vouch that the film-makers have captured the electricity and the magic of those occasions with great skill. Barenboim is performing the Beethoven cycle again at London's Festival Hall in Jan/Feb 2008. Go if you can ... buy this set if you can't ... better still, do both.

This is a stunning performance by Barenboim and the Master classes are a bonus. I expected nothing less from Barenboim. What mars the DVD for me is the fault common to all DVD and Video musical presentations these days, the producers have far too many toys to play with. The ever changing camera angles are a distraction and quite unnecessary. Hardly 10 seconds go by without changes of shot that add nothing to the enjoyment of the music. It would be interesting to have the producers go through just a minute or so of the film and come up with justifications of all their changes of view.
Having got that off my chest, I thoroughly recommend this DVD on purely musical grounds.
